Swansea vs SOU As It Happened
Key moments so far
- Saints fell behind in added time, before goals from Elyounoussi and Long rescued the tie
- Joel Piroe equalised for Swansea, taking the tie to extra-time
- Saints were reduced to ten men when Yan Valery saw red in the 30th minute
- Redmond broke the deadlock in the eighth minute, latching onto a lovely pass from Tella
JOB DONE! 😅
Well, that was tough. Saints were ahead, and then had to come from behind in extra-time to secure a place in round four. Goals from Moi Elyounoussi and Shane Long rescued the tie for Ralph Hasenhüttl's side.
Fantastic run from Longy
The striker carries the ball over the halfway line, relieving the pressure but also fashioning a chance for Elyounoussi. Suddenly Saints had an overload in attack, with Diallo and Elyounoussi both targets in the middle, but the latter couldn't organise his feet in time. Chance wasted.
Piroe heads over
Dhanda crosses accurately, with Piroe meeting it with his head. The effort ends up over the bar, but the chance was presentable. Perraud did enough to knock the striker off balance.
The final 15 minutes...
Here we go for the final 15 minutes of football. If the scores remain, Saints progress. If we end in deadlock, the outcome will be decided by penalties.
ET: We've reached the halfway point...
AND BREATHE! Well that was a breathless 15 minutes. Including three goals. Swansea fired first, as Bednarek turned into his own net, but boy did Saints turn on the style in the proceedings moments. Goals from Elyounoussi and Long.
GET INNNNNNNNNN
Surely that's the winner! Ward-Prowse delivers a magnificent ball into Long, who applies the easiest of first-time finishes. It's that wand of a right foot from the captain that has created the goal!
GOOOAL!!!
Shane Long (101’) | 2 – 3
Lovely ball, Longy 👏
The pass before the goal...
IMMEDIATE RESPONSE
Fine work from Shane Long. whose running is rewarded with an assist. He pulled the ball back towards Elyounoussi centrally, who takes a neat touch before finding the corner of the net. Saints back level.
GOOOAL!!!
Mohamed Elyounoussi (95’) | 2 – 2
OWN GOAL
Ntcham fizzes a ball across the face of goal and Jan Bednarek inadvertently turns the ball into the back of his own net.
GOAL
Olivier Ntcham (94’) | 2 – 1

Here we go (again)...
Another 30 minutes of football to come! Saints have had to play over an hour (so far) with a man less, which must be taking its toll! Four changes have been made thus far, the competition permits five.
FULL-TIME: Swansea 1-1 Southampton
Nothing to separate the sides here. We'll go to extra-time...
Yellow Card for Jack Stephens (Southampton)
From one end to the other...
Elyounoussi had picked the pocket of Bennett, yielding a three on two situation for Saints, which was wasted. The pass was intended for Romeu but missed its mark. On the break, Piroe gathered the ball centrally and went toe-toe with Forster. The keeper stood tall and saved with his leg. Excellent goalkeeping.
Penalty shouts waved away
Long is bundled over in the box after Ward-Prowse played a raking pass out towards the run of Perraud. The full-back crossed towards substitute Long, who went down in the box. Nothing given.
Southampton substitution: Mohamed Elyounoussi replaces Nathan Tella
Southampton substitution: Shane Long replaces Armando Broja
Grimes shot parried
Substitute Grimes forced Forster into an awkward save, only parrying towards Cullen. The ball was bouncing, making the chance more difficult, before Forster atoned for his earlier mistake with a follow up save.
Swansea are level
Smith finds Naughton, who squares the ball and it's well defended by Stephens. The ball drops fortuitously to top scorer Piroe from three yards, who smashes it into the roof of the net. Equaliser.
GOAL
Joël Piroe (76’) | 1 – 1

Romeu fires at goal
Plenty of power behind the shot from the midfielder, but less precision. On target, but it always favoured goalkeeper Hamer who produced an easy save. Saints now have Diallo and Romeu partnered in midfield.
Southampton substitution: Adam Armstrong replaces Nathan Redmond
Southampton substitution: Ibrahima Diallo replaces Stuart Armstrong
First change.
Saints should be out of sight
Opportunities wasted here in Wales. As yet, that hasn't come back to bite Saints but there's plenty of the tie still left to play. Reinforcements enter the fray from a Swansea perspective - including Grimes.
Saints miss the chance to go further ahead...
A late challenge on Romeu is punishable by a free-kick. Predictably, Ward-Prowse delivers and Stephens snuck around the back undetected. The ball bounces awkwardly in front of him but he gets his head to it. Should score. Doesn't.
Manning earns corner
Saints defending in numbers as Stephens turns behind, at the expense of a corner. It's taken short, as Manning himself elects to cross. It's a teasing ball in, towards Obafemi, but Forster is alert and claims.
Manning shot tame
He stole the ball off Redmond, winning it astutely but the shot didn't have much drive behind it. Straight down the midriff of Forster who saves comfortably.
SHOULD BE TWO!
Fabulous work from Broja, after sloppy play from Swansea at the back. The striker pinches the ball and drives forward, he crosses from a tight angle towards Tella but he can't gain the connection he'd have liked. Big chance.
Front foot football
Saints looking to start the second period on a positive note. The shape remains the same, with Ward-Prowse dropping back to full-back in place of Valery. Stu Armstrong is partnering Romeu in midfield.
Players return to the field...
Both sets of players out on the field of play. We've got 11 vs 10 for this second 45 minutes of football. No changes from either side.
Danger man 👀
Nathan Tella looked dangerous in the first period, can he unlock Swansea in the second? 🤞
HALF-TIME Swansea 0-1 Southampton (Redmond 8')
Ten man Saints continue to lead. The visitors were certainly deserved of the lead, until a game-changing moment in the 30th minute, as Yan Valery saw red. Redmond with the goal, but a difficult second half to follow with a player less.
Game changer
Certainly the dismissal has changed the momentum of the game. It was all Saints prior to the red card, but Swansea have enjoyed far more of the ball since. Obafemi has looked useful down the left. Saints holding firm as it stands - Forster yet to make a save.
Yellow Card for Brandon Cooper (Swansea City)
For dragging Broja back.
Yellow Card for Ryan Bennett (Swansea City)
The quickness of Tella's feet fools the defender. He receives a booking for the awkward attempt at a challenge.
Piroe shot collected
Swansea now enjoying a period of possession, taking advantage of the extra man. Piroe's effort is caught by Forster, before Naughton also tries his luck from distance. Nothing concerning.
Red Card for Yan Valery (Southampton)
The full-back is dismissed for his second yellow of the game. Obafemi had freed himself and was tripped by Valery. Saints are down to ten men.
CAPTAIN 👨✈️
Prowsey is dominating proceedings in midfield.
Saints exploiting gaps
Tella wriggles free this time, down the right channel. He squares a pass towards Broja who is charged down by men in white. The visitors playing with plenty of confidence - they need another goal to capitalise on this period of dominance.
ACTION MAN 📸
Stu Armstrong is right in the thick of things. Broja is the latest player to enjoy a chance, as he evades the offside trap and springs up in between Swansea's centre-halves. The first touch is excellent, but covering defender Manning does well.
Ward-Prowse recognises the space
A lovely cross-field pass from the captain finds the marauding run of Valery, who links neatly with Armstrong. The delivery is towards Broja, but doesn't quite reach its target. More smart play.
Armstrong wins a free-kick
Dangerous position, Ward-Prowse dinks it over the wall towards the run of Nathan Tella. Swansea operating a very high line, giving Tella space to exploit. The eventual shot is deflected over.
Redders on target 🎯
Erm, Redders, we're this way... 😅
Smart build up
Patient from Saints, before a clawing Ward-Prowse pass finds Yan Valery down the right. The ball had slightly too much weight on it, meaning Valery had to jump to control it. Saints recycle the ball, but the possession is much more promising.
Romeu concedes free-kick
Romeu is slightly too heavy-handed with former teammate Obafemi. It leads to a free-kick, with Naughton taking on the shot which deflects off Ward-Prowse. The resulting corner is cleared.
DEADLOCK BROKEN
A poor pass is seized upon by Nathan Tella, who feeds an incisive pass towards namesake Redmond, and he makes no mistake! A lovely side-footed finish, low into the corner. Calm and clinical!
GOOOAL!!!
Nathan Redmond (8’) | 0 – 1
Hey, boss 👋
Ralph Hasenhüttl watches on from the sidelines.
Wasteful in possession
Swansea have been the smarter of the two sides on the ball. Saints haven't quite got going. Both full-backs are being expansive, trying to kickstart Southampton attacks but as yet no joy.
Walsh fires wide
Edge of the box, right footed shot from Walsh which flies a yard wide of the post. In the preamble, Yan Valery was booked for a late challenge.
