Chelsea progress to the final 8
A more than valiant effort from Saints! They bow out of the cup following a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat at the hands of league leaders Chelsea.
James to seal it...
He can win it here. He rolls it home and Chelsea secure progression in the cup.
Ori is up, he has to score...
Straight down the middle. This shootout is still alive!
Chilwell to take
No problem for him, Chelsea lead 3-2 now.
Smallbone, this is a big moment for him!
He's skied it miles over. Agony for Will.
Hudson-Odoi striding forward
Planted it in the corner. 2-2 now.
Long's turn...
Lovely taken penalty. Kepa goes one way, the ball the other. Saints lead 2-1.
Mount to take next...
EXCELLENT SAVE! Forster denies Mount.
Walcott for Saints...
Saved. Kepa or the post. Or both. Either way, he's missed.
Alonso to take...
Again sends the keeper the wrong way. Dispatched with power.
Armstrong is first up...
He scores! Sending Kepa the wrong way. Very confident penalty.
FULL-TIME: Chelsea 1-1 Southampton
We're going to penalties! It's been a dramatic 90 minutes, both sides could have won it. Terrific saves from both goalkeepers. Stay tuned for what's next...
SOOOOO CLOSE
WOW! What a header from Lyanco. It's well saved by Kepa. Now it's Salisu's turn, but again Kepa saves. That couldn't have been any closer! Saints throwing everything at this, Smallbone has delivered three corners in succession but the ball just won't go in.
Hudson-Odoi into side-netting
Lovely build up from Chelsea, but the forward fires into the side-netting. Forster had it covered, in truth - he's then booked for supposed time wasting with the goal-kick.
Giving it everything!
It's fairly end to end stuff here. Both teams gunning for the win, rather than to settle for penalties. Armstrong still attempting to work the line, but good defending from Chalobah - he's been excellent.
Second Smallbone effort
He's been amongst it since coming on! A header first off, and now a long shot which finishes off target. Great to see the midfielder back in the thick of things. This one could go either way...
He's magic, you knowwwww....
Here comes Tino Livramento!
Yellow Card for Moussa Djenepo (Southampton)
Cynical pull back on Chilwell.
Southampton substitution: Will Smallbone replaces Stuart Armstrong
Welcome back, Will! A lovely sight!
Southampton substitution: Oriol Romeu replaces Ibrahima Diallo
Probably a wise move, as Diallo had been booked.
Saints under seige
Seventh corner of the night for Chelsea. Chalobah was the eventual striker, following some pin-ball in the box, but Forster gathers well.
Saul fires wide
A clear sight of goal for Chelsea. Havertz and Mount both causing problems, linking well. The ball was worked to the edge of the area, hit first time by Saul but he's off target.
Longy heads just wide
Lovely floated free-kick from Armstrong, Long meets it. Looked to be guiding the ball down for a willing runner, rather than direct the header at goal. Either way, it trickles wide.
Walcott down
Brief break in play here, the arm of Alonso caught Walcott in the back of the head. He's receiving treatment. Remember, no extra-time in this year's competition. Straight to penalties if this scoreline persists!
Changes...
Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell are being introduced for the hosts. Barkley and Ziyech make way.
Southampton substitution: Shane Long replaces Nathan Tella
Second offensive change.
Southampton substitution: Theo Walcott replaces Ché Adams
First change of the night.
HOTTING UP 🔥
Ticking towards the hour mark and there's some heat in this one now. Feels like the next goal will be crucial. Chelsea on top as it stands, Havertz and Barkley both looking threatening.
James effort tipped over
Forster was alert! It needed saving, would have crept under the crossbar. Free-kick was conceded by Adams and James attempted to go direct but it was tipped over. Barkley is quick on the attack in the aftermath, forcing another Forster save from a tight angle.
A.Armstrong forces save
It was captain Stu who created the opportunity with some superb midfield running. Armstrong joined the attack and hit the shot low and hard, but Kepa repelled.
Immediate response
Havertz taking the game by the scruff, carving out the chance single handedly. He forces a smart stop from Forster, denying him a second goal of the night. Walker-Peters ensures the ball is cleared fully.
POACHER!!!
Adams hammers it home and Saints are level. Valery picks the pocket of Sarr before feeding Walker-Peters who motored towards goal, he shot low, and it wasn't dealt with by Kepa. It falls kindly to Adams who makes no mistake!
GOOOAL!!!
Ché Adams (47’) | 1 – 1
Here we go again...
Welcome back! Players have emerged for the second period. The home side leading by a single goal...
Big second half to come...
Saints can rightly feel as if they're unlucky to be behind. Bar the Forster save in the opening exchanges, the visitors' defending has been comfortable. It's certainly not over yet, second half action is on its way!
HALF-TIME: Chelsea 1-0 Southampton (Havertz 44')
Saints grew into the game and will be disappointed to go into the break behind.
Havertz heads home
An easy goal for Chelsea. The corner is swung in centrally and Havertz jumped highest through a crowd of players. The first time Saints have been tested and it ends up in the back of the net. Simple header nestles in the far corner.
GOAL
Kai Havertz (45’) | 1 – 0

Alonso on the charge
He sprints the entire half of the pitch, before squaring the ball first time towards Havertz, but Lyanco intercepts at the expense of a corner.
Lyanco bossing it
Really good tussle between Lyanco and Havertz. Saints resolute in their defending thus far. Approaching the break goalless.
THE BOSS 😎
Orchestrating from the sidelines at Stamford Bridge. Still no breakthrough at either end.
Armstrong shot
Walker-Peters does well to fashion the opening, and gets fouled on the way into the box. Play continues as the ball falls to Armstrong in a dangerous position, who shoots but it's well saved by Kepa.
Lovely move
Started by Stu Armstrong, Adams works the channel. Ball eventually falls to Djenepo who wins a corner. Stu rose highest to flick on, with Adam Armstrong meeting it at the back post. CLOSE!
Hudson-Odoi crosses
Chelsea on the attack again, with Hudson-Odoi. He worked a yard of space before crossing towards Barkley, slightly overhit. Havertz takes it on in the next wave of attack, forcing a good save from Forster. Corner given.
Yellow Card for Ibrahima Diallo (Southampton)
Fairly cynical tug on Kovacic.
Battling HARD 💪
Really good battle emerging here at Stamford Bridge.
Havertz shot marginally wide
Terrific effort from the German, who worked the ball onto his right foot before shooting. Forster would have been beaten, but fortunately the ball bends just wide of the far post.
ACTION SHOT 📸
Forster's earlier save...
Armstrong effort blocked
He smashed his shot against James. Saints holding their own here, matching Chelsea's early intensity. A good watch so far!
Good pressure, Tella
Tella pressing high, winning the ball back for Saints. He's won a free-kick from Alonso, who was rather clumsy in the challenge. Chance to throw one into the box. Armstrong to take and it's behind for a corner.
Terrific save from Forster
He threw himself to his left, and got a strong hand to Saul's headed effort. Superb stop to prevent the defender.
High press from Chelsea
The hosts are piling on the pressure early. It's a particularly fast start from the Blues, with all players looking to impress manager Thomas Tuchel. Hudson-Odoi particularly lively - winning the first corner of the night.
Good tempo
Adam Armstrong attempts to break away down the left, but his pocket is picked. Chelsea counter with Alonso, but he's brought down by captain Stu. The free-kick is well worked, providing a shooting opportunity for Hudson-Odoi. Forster saves comfortably.
