Match Report

The unbeaten run has come to an end but it's still been an incredible start to the season for Saints who at one point today were in third. We're back in action next Monday as we travel to Brighton and Hove Albion looking to bounce straight back!

You can read back the action from St Mary's in our match report right HERE.

Full-Time: Saints 2-3 Man United

A game of two halves. Saints looked in control at half-time, two goals to the good and United offering little. Then Edinson Cavani comes on.

With half an hour to go, Fernandes levelled and then a Cavani double has meant Saints unbeaten run has come to an end.

Cavani claims the three points

Edinson Cavani has been the difference at St Mary's. Rashford whips a cross in and it's another header from Cavani who gets ahead of Vestergaard and looks to give United the three points.

GOAL

Five minutes added on!

Plenty of time to go here at St Mary's...

90’

Southampton substitution: Ibrahima Diallo replaces Stuart Armstrong

A sign of ensuring a point from Hasenhüttl as he sends on defensive midfielder Diallo.

Sponsored by Utilita

89’

VAR check...

It's a cross from Wan-Bissaka which hits Bertrand and VAR checks it but it rules it didn't hit the arm of the full back. Corner is then cleared.

Can Saints get another?

It doesn't look likely as the game looks to be slowing down a little with Saints not wanting to concede another. Ward-Prowse however is over a dead-ball and crosses into the box but Lindelof heads it clear.

Think both sides would be happy with a point here but a winner isn't out of the question.

84’

Manchester United substitution: Brandon Williams replaces Alex Nicolao Telles

It's a final substitute for Man United as Brandon Williams comes on for Alex Telles who has a minor injury by the looks of it.

Saints unable to hold onto lead

Man United have improved massively in this second half since the introduction of Edinson Cavani and at the moment Saints are unable to get the ball out and keep possession in the United half.

Ten minutes to go here and you feel Saints might be happy with a point if this pressure continues.

79’

Adams!

The striker gets Saints first real chance since the early stages of the half as he brings the ball down and on the turn shoots but it's wide...

Cavani levels for United

It was a great diving header from the United forward but Saints will be gutted to not hold on to that 2-0 lead. There is still ten minutes left here for Saints to try and find the winner...

United level

If someone was scoring next, it was Edinson Cavani. A corner is cleared to Fernandes who shoots but it finds Cavani free in the area who dives low and heads at pace past McCarthy.

Southampton substitution: Shane Long replaces Moussa Djenepo

We presume that Walcott will now move out onto the wing with Long partnering Adams upfront.

Cavani goes close!

The Argentinian has changed United in this second half and he gets a head on the end of a Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross but luckily it goes inches wide of the far post.

Fernandes makes it 2-1

Bruno Fernandes has been outstanding for United this season and his attacking prowess has struck again to bring the visitors back into the game at St Mary's.

United break McCarthy resistance

It's Edinson Cavani who finds Fernandes free in the area, he has time to turn and shoot low into the net past McCarthy.

Saints haven't been sitting back on their lead knowing 2-0 is a dangerous scoreline but the goal has gone to the visitors. Game on...

60’

GOAL

57’

Cavani hits over!

Fernandes pulls a cross in from the byline and beats the on-stretching McCarthy and the ball finally lands to Cavani but his shot is over for a corner.

In the midst of the block, Bednarek and Djenepo collide throwing their bodies in the way and the Polish defender is receiving treatment...

53’

McCarthy does it again!

Marcus Rashford is through on goal after beating the offside trap but loses in a battle with McCarthy who saves from the England international.

50’

Walcott fancies a goal...

The striker once again takes an effort at the United goal but it's straight at Henderson who collects standing up into his chest. It's been a good start to the half as Saints aren't sitting back on their lead.

48’

Early effort from Walcott

Theo gets the ball, to the right side of the area, and shoots across Henderson but it's easily gathered by the half-time substitute in the United goal.

Second half underway!

Man Utd kicks us off as Saints look to bring home the three points as they lead 2-0!

HT

Manchester United substitution: Edinson Cavani replaces Mason Greenwood

It's a straight swap up front too for the visitors as Cavani comes on to replace Greenwood.

HT

Manchester United substitution: Dean Henderson replaces David de Gea

David De Gea did look injured after that free-kick from Ward-Prowse and this half-time substitution looks to have confirmed it.

Together.

If there is one thing that symbolises Saints it's togetherness and that is shown in this picture! A picture that says a lot about this team at the moment.

However, there is 45 minutes to go for Saints to claim all three points...

Half-time: Saints 2-0 Man Utd

These two have Saints ahead at the break! It has been a similar story with the Captain at the heart of the goals from a dead ball situation, firstly a corner for Bednarek to head home before a free-kick of his own.

It could have been different with Man Utd having two good chances to go ahead but Saints grew from these near chances and now lead with 45 minutes to go.

🏌️‍♂️

The Captain must have a great golf swing by now with the amount of practice he's been getting on the pitch recently!

Just a few minutes for Saints to keep their two goal lead going into the break...

Running out of words.

Brilliant. Fantastic. Incredible. Ultimately how does Ward-Prowse keep doing it!? I don't know but as long as he does!

Cmd C + Cmd V

It's just copy and paste from James Ward-Prowse as he scores another free-kick! David De Gea did everything within his powers to reach and keep it out but he couldn't. Pinpoint from the Captain.

GOALSCORER 8 James Ward-Prowse

GUESS HOW HE HAS SCORED!?

IT'S A FREE-KICK SPECIAL AGAIN!!! It's from an angle, just outside the area, is pinpoint inside the post and De Gea gets a hand to it but he can't stretch enough to keep it out as it bundles into the net.

Saints are 2-0 up against Man Utd! What an opening 30 minutes here!

33’

GOOOAL!!!

James Ward-Prowse (33’) | 2 0

32’

WHAT A SAVE BY MCCARTHY!

He brings on the chance himself but goodness that's how you make up for a mistake. McCarthy has to save firstly from Greenwood and then the rebound falls to Fernandes who should score but McCarthy comes up so fast that he denies the Portguese midfielder! Incredible.

Bednarek enjoyed that one!

A classic centre half goal from a set piece has given Saints the lead! It was the perfect cross from James Ward-Prowse and Bednarek got enough of a touch to glance it past De Gea.

28’

OFF THE POST!

OH MY! Walker-Peters lets an effort go from inside the area and it deflects on it's way through and hits the outside of the post for a corner...

The opening goal!

Here is that goal from Jan Bednarek that opens the scoring at St Mary's! It was a great flick on header and De Gea was most likely crowded out.

GOALSCORER 35 Jan Bednarek

AND IT'S GONE IN!!!

Bednarek flicks on at the front post and heads in past David De Gea! It was a great delivery by the Captain who delivers in under the nose of De Gea and Bednarek gets their first to flick it past the keeper!

23’

GOOOAL!!!

Jan Bednarek (23’) | 1 0

23’

Saints win their first corner

Ward-Prowse delivers a free-kick which is headed behind for a corner kick. It's whipped in by the Captain...

Words from Ralph...

It's not been the start we have been use to in recent games as Manchester United cause problems in the early stages. Saints unable to build possession but in the last minute or two have picked up the tempo in their passing...

19’

Yellow Card for James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

The Captain is booked for an earlier tackle on Donny Van de Beek. The referee played on from the foul moments ago but he has booked the midfielder retrospectively.

17’

How close!

It's the man you expect, Bruno Fernandes, who unleashes an effort from 20/25 yards that flies past McCarthy and hits the outside of the post for a corner which is cleared.

United on top in early stages

Saints haven't been under extended amounts of pressure but United have had the majority of possession and the only chance of the game so far.

As I type, Romeu gives away a freekick for a foul on Fernandes as Saints looked to intercept on the counter but the midfielder was late.

9’

VAR check...

Marcus Rashford goes down under a challenge from James Ward-Prowse in the area but VAR doesn't award a penalty. Play continues...

8’

First chance of the game!

Jannik Vestergaard and Alex McCarthy cross wires and Mason Greenwood pounces on a split second lapse to round McCarthy but hits the side netting. An early sign of intent that Saints get away with. 0-0.

RIP Diego Maradona

Before KO, there is a minutes applause for Diego Maradona who passed away earlier this week.

Those final touches before KO...

Who will get on the scoresheet if we're to gain a positive result today!? A Ward-Prowse free-kick? Walcott to make it two in two? 🤔

Kick-off is just ten minutes away!

Alex McCarthy! 🔥

One person in red hot form is keeper Alex McCarthy. Can he, if selected, make it five clean sheets for the season against today's opponents?

12.27

Todays opponents...

Manchester United have had a rocky start to the season by their expectations but are currently on a three match unbeaten run across all competitions.

They sit 13th in the league but three points could see them jump as high as 6th showing how tight it is. Bruno Fernandes has been in red hot form with 14 attacking returns in his sides opening eight games and will be the man to watch.
