FULL TIME: Southampton 2-0 Everton
That's it! An impressive performance from start to finish from Saints, who deservedly take the three points and end Everton's unbeaten start to the season. First-half goals from James Ward-Prowse and Ché Adams decided it, with Lucas Digne's second-half dismissal for an ugly tackle on Kyle Walker-Peters ending the visitors' hopes of a revival. Saints move up to fifth, three points off the top...
Yellow Card for Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)
It's a yellow card for Calvert-Lewin, who was late on Vestergaard. The striker had scored in every game this season coming into this one.
5️⃣ added minutes...
Everton's misery is almost at an end. Five more minutes for them to endure.
N'Lundulu comes on for his debut 💥
It's a first senior appearance for young striker Dan N'Lundulu, who is on for Adams for the final minutes.
Ward-Prowse's touch just lets him down
Everton can't wait for this to be all over. It's wave after wave of Saints attack, as this time Romeu lifts the ball in behind for Ward-Prowse, who makes another lung-busting run from deep but cannot bring the ball down as a big chance beckoned.
Is James injured?
Everton's Colombian talisman is walking around and looks uncomfortable. He just trotted across for a word with his manager, but the visitors have already made their three substitutions. It looks like he'll have to continue.
Allan rescues Everton
Again Saints threaten a third, as Armstrong's pass across goal is crucially intercepted by Allan with Adams poised to shoot. Ings was also available to Armstrong's left, as Saints continue to flood forward in search of more goals.
Red Card for Lucas Digne (Everton)
Digne is shown a straight red for an ugly challenge down the back of Walker-Peters's achilles. He's down receiving treatment, while Everton are down to 10 men.
Yellow Card for Bernard Anício Caldeira Duarte (Everton)
Bernard sends Romeu flying and goes into the book.
Saints come close again
Another excellent counter-attack is led by Adams, before Armstrong finds space on the left and fires the ball across goal with Ings rushing in, but it flashes beyond the reach of the onrushing striker, who is hungry to get his name on the scoresheet.
Yellow Card for Kyle Walker-Peters (Southampton)
The defender goes into the book for handling Digne's cross from the left. It's a free-kick near the left corner of the penalty area, with Sigurdsson and Digne standing over it.
Redmond shoots off target
Another swift counter-attack from Saints, who looked like getting caught in their own half but Bednarek won the ball back, before Walker-Peters and Armstrong combined to find Redmond, but the winger's attempted curler is high and wide of the far corner.
Bertrand goes down in the box...
Saints have continued their energetic approach at the start of the second half. Bertrand goes down under the challenge of James in the box, and now Bednarek is down having taken a knock off the ball. Everton seemingly survive on both counts.
Second half is under way
We're back up and running at St Mary's!
HALF TIME: Southampton 2-0 Everton
A superb first half for Saints draws to a close. The hosts have outplayed the Premier League leaders and taken advantage with goals from James Ward-Prowse and Ché Adams, both assisted by Danny Ings. Everton fired a warning shot when Gylfi Sigurdsson hammered a long-range shot against the crossbar, but otherwise have been excellently contained by a buoyant home team. More of the same, please!
1️⃣ added minute...
We're into a short period of first-half stoppage time at St Mary's.
Saints denied a third!
This has been a brilliant first half from Saints, who have the ball in the net for a third time, only to be denied by the offside flag. Adams runs in behind the defence, holds the ball up, waits for support and feeds the onrushing Armstrong, who finishes in style from 20 yards, but Adams is retrospectively flagged offside after the assistant referee allowed Saints to complete the attack.
ADAMS MAKES IT TWO!!!
Saints have been well on top and deservedly double their lead thanks to more good work from Ings, who crosses to the far post where Adams and Ward-Prowse are both waiting. The striker takes charge, steadies himself and thumps a low shot into the net. Great stuff here at St Mary's!
GOOOAL!!!
Ché Adams (34’) | 2 – 0
Saints continue on the front foot
The goal has not stopped Saints pushing forward for more, as Redmond gets to the byeline and stands up a delicate cross to the far post, but nobody in red and white reads his intentions and Everton clear the danger.
PROWSEEEYYYYY!!!!
Saints have the opener, as Ings threads the ball in behind the Everton defence for Ward-Prowse, who takes a touch across Digne and blasts the ball past Pickford! Get in!
GOOOAL!!!
James Ward-Prowse (26’) | 1 – 0
Ings forces another mistake
More good pressing from Saints' leading man, this time forcing Keane to concede a throw-in deep inside his own half. He just never stops, does he? 😅
Redmond tries his luck
Good pressure from Saints, who launch attacks down both flanks, before Romeu picks out Redmond on the far side of the box, but he's off balance as he shoots and blazes the ball high and wide.
So unlucky from Sigurdsson...
That's a let-off for Saints, as James spreads the play to Sigurdsson, who attacks the left corner of the penalty area and lets fly with a rocket of a shot that dips suddenly and crashes against the top of the crossbar with McCarthy rooted to the spot. That would have been some goal.
Bertrand on the attack again
The Saints left-back needs no second invitation to gallop forward, but this time his drilled cross is into the side-netting.
...It's a first save for McCarthy
James strikes it well, but it's too close to the Saints No 1, who safely takes it into his grasp.
Free-kick for Everton...
This is in shooting territory, just right of centre, after Bertrand trips Calvert-Lewin 25 yards from goal. James Rodríguez is eyeing it up...
Redmond goes close! 😨
That was a great chance for Saints, as Bertrand charged down the left and cut the ball back for Redmond, but he rather scuffed his first-time shot, dragging it wide of the far post but not wide enough for the onrushing Adams, who slid in hoping for a tap in.
First sight of goal for Calvert-Lewin
Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the Premier League's joint top scorer, having scored in every match so far. Iwobi looks to pick him out with a low ball across the six-yard line, but Bednarek does enough to force it behind for a corner.
Ings hunts down Pickford
Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been in the spotlight this week after his heavy challenge on Virgil van Dijk led to the former Saint sustaining a serious injury in the Merseyside derby. Danny Ings tries to test out the England stopper as he sprints to close him down, and forces a nervous clearance out for a throw-in.
Everton launch their first attack
Allan escapes Ward-Prowse in midfield, before Keane sees Iwobi in space down the left. He plays a difficult first-time pass to set the winger free, but it's just overhit and Everton miss the chance to create an opening.
Early pressure from Saints! 💪
Ward-Prowse swings in a typically devilish free-kick that's put behind for a corner, before his flag kick is aimed at Vestergaard, who commits a foul as he rises to meet it. Encouraging early signs...
