It's the end of the road in the EFL Cup for Saints. Adams and Ings were left to rue their missed chances during the early stages of the first half, as Brentford hit back during the latter stages with two goals through Nørgaard and Dasilva. The second half was all Saints, but Daniels was left relatively untroubled in the Brentford goal apart from having to deal with a looping Stephens header.

A half to forget for Saints, as Brentford hit twice in the final five minutes to secure a handsome advantage going into the break. Ings will have been disappointed not to have given Saints the lead after 20 minutes, following a perfectly timed Bertrand volleyed cross. The visitors made Hasenhüttl's side pay; Nørgaard heading home from a corner before Dasilva fired into the net in added time.
