Match Report
Told you he enjoyed it! And we enjoyed that full time whistle too! Three points in the bag for the trip back to Southampton.
Full-Time: Burnley 0-1 Saints
You could hear Ralph Hasenhuttl from Southampton at full-time there! He is delighted and should be as Saints score early, defend well and take the three points.
Stephens!!
Burnley now push and the ball lands to Stephens who has time but his shot is blocked. Pope is up for the corner!
Three minutes added on
Saints just need to hold on here.
Ings goal...
Armstrong again in the middle of the pitch and plays in Ings who finishes perfectly into the top corner but the striker was offside
Armstrong gets a shot away
The Scot gets free in the centre of the pitch, has Tella free but goes alone and his shot is blocked.
Counting down the clock
Under five minutes left now of normal time as the game continues in the same vain. Saints getting closer to those valuable three points to change the momentum of the season.
Ten minutes left
We are into the 80th minute and the Saints defence will be hoping this half just continues as it is. Neither side pushing the other here and Saints have no need to force the game with the lead.
Ings with the cutback
The striker gets free down the left hand side but his cutback is intercepted. Best moment of play from Saints in this half so far.
Saints lead with 15 minutes to go
Still no chances to bring from Turf Moor but Saints are winning and three points is all that matters. Burnley mostly attacking Saints down the wings which is being dealt with comfortably.
Saints persevering
It's been a slow second half so far but with Saints in the lead, Ralph Hasenhuttl will be content. However, it is a slim advantage they have. Both sides struggling to get going and offer any chances here.
Save!
Here's that McCarthy save, which might be the first time he's been called upon this evening. Burnley with all the chances in this second half so far with half an hour to go.
Save from McCarthy!
Bardsley gets a cross into the back post but McNeil saves it. He plays it back to the on rushing Charlie Taylor who unleashes a shot but McCarthy is a match for it to push it away.
Wood has the ball in the net!
but it's not going to count. The ball is played over the top by Nick Pope and the flag is raised against Wood, probably for offside. Bertrand goes to sweep up and plays it back to McCarthy but it's not hard enough and Wood intercepts to tap it in but it won't count.
Limited chances
The second half has started how the first half finished with not many chances for either side. Both playing in a way that is hard to break down and are cancelling each other out.
Yellow Card for Phil Bardsley (Burnley)
The defender slides in, pulls out but just catches Djenepo who goes down.
Chance for Wood!
Burnley with their best chance of the game straight from kick off. A diagonal cross finds Chris Wood who tries to head across goal but McCarthy can catch it safely.
Second-half begins!
45 minutes away from that crucial first three points of the season. Can we do it? Stay here to find out. Come on you Saints!
Your player of the first half...
No surprises who the fans think was our best player of the first half! Three goals in as many 2020/21 Premier League games now for the striker.
A happy man
Ralph Hasenhuttl will be glad to get in with the lead after last weeks late equaliser before the break. What will he be saying to keep it going in the next 45?
Half-Time: Burnley 0-1 Saints
Danny Ings is the man again as Saints go in at half-time with a 1-0 lead. It was great work from the number 9 and his strike partner Che Adams to make the most of the only chance of the first 45.
Added on time
Nearing the end of the half with just a minute added on.
Djenepo gets a shot away
Moussa tries to create that space around the right hand side of the area and does but his shot is blocked and then claimed before it's a corner by Burnley keeper Nick Pope.
Armstrong cross
Armstrong wriggles his way down the wing and eventually gets a cross away but Jimmy Dunne clears for a corner. However, It is safely cleared.
Yellow Card for Stuart Armstrong (Southampton)
Charlie Taylor gets past the Scot and before he's able to cross it in, Armstrong uses his arm to put down Taylor.
VAR check
Moussa Djenepo goes up with Phil Bardsley and does lead with an elbow in a natural jumping motion. VAR check the footage but no action is taken.
Walker-Peters continues to impress
This man has been a key member since the Premier League restart last season. Once again involved in the play tonight and provided the key pass for Adams to setup Ings for the opener.
Ings x Adams
I think Ingsy was thankful for that pass from Adams!
Another block!
Vydra gets on the end of a knockdown but again Vestergaard is there to block the shot over for a corner.
Brownhill gets shot away
Josh Brownhill gets on the end of a cross from Matej Vydra but Vestergaard gets the block in! The big Dane then clears the resulting corner.
Adams!
Firstly the striker just can't get on the end of a cross from Walker-Peters. Then good work from Djenepo feeds in Bertrand and he finds Adams inside the area with space but he hits high over the bar.
That first goal of the season has to come soon if he keeps getting in those positions.
Saints on top
The visitors definitely are having the better share of possession. No chances since the goal but Saints patiently but with pace passing the ball around as Burnley keep their shape.
Corner to Saints
Ryan Bertrand plays it into the area and finds Jan Bednarek but his header safely goes out of play. Saints in the lead and chasing down their opponents. Perfect start.
WHAT A START!
FIRST CHANCE! Walker-Peters plays in Che Adams who gets in behind the Burnley defence and he plays it selflessly into Ings who gets to easily tap it in!
GOOOAL!!!
Danny Ings (5’) | 0 – 1
