Saints' winning away run ends
Southampton’s run of consecutive Premier League away wins came to an end at Anfield, but not without a performance that had the runaway leaders worried at least until half time. Our report from Anfield.17.27
Ings fires wide
Shot takes a deflection off Robertson and goes for a corner. Ward-Prowse delivers but no takers. Saints look dangerous when going forward but, as yet, can't take their chances.
FULL-TIME: Liverpool 4-0 Southampton
Perhaps not what the visitors deserved, but a four goal haul, all scored in the second half, secures three points for the Premier League leaders. A ruthless display from Jürgen Klopp's side.
Liverpool have a fourth
It's a cruel end to the tie for Saints as Firmino tees up Salah for his second of the afternoon. Ward-Prowse had attempted to divert the ball, but somehow the Egyptian managed to squeeze it over the line.
Mohamed Salah Ghaly (90’) | 4 – 0
Yellow Card for Jack Stephens (Southampton)
For tugging back Firmino on the break.
Salah tees up a combination of Kieta and Minamino, who appear to get in each other's way as the latter takes the shot on. Flies over the crossbar.
Boufal bends wide
It's a good effort from the substitute, trying to curl the ball beyond Alisson. Didn't have quite enough whip on it, as it flies a yard wide of the far post.
Firmino is played through by Wijnaldum, but McCarthy comes flying off his line to deny Liverpool a fourth. Very alert goalkeeping. Liverpool come again but Fabinho's shot is way off target.
Obafemi at the back post
Ward-Prowse corner was delivered deep, with Jan Bednarek rising highest. It falls to Obafemi at the back stick, but rather bounces off him and behind.
Salah makes it three
Henderson plays the ball forward towards the Egyptian down the right, who sits McCarthy down before clipping the ball over him. Smart finish, giving Liverpool their third of the afternoon.
Mohamed Salah Ghaly (71’) | 3 – 0
Yellow Card for James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)
For a pull back on Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Lovely link up
Højbjerg links well with Ings on the edge of the Liverpool box. It's the midfielder who opts to take the shot on which is blocked. The hosts break from the resulting corner, which ends in Ward-Prowse being booked for a foul on Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Henderson doubles the lead
A clearance falls at the feet of Firmino, who works the ball infield to Henderson and the finish is emphatic. Gave McCarthy no chance. The build up was fortuitous, but Liverpool have a second goal.
Jordan Henderson (60’) | 2 – 0
Salah finds the net
But the winger was offside in the build up and the goal won't count. It was a smart finish beneath McCarthy, but the flag was up early and VAR confirms the decision. Play resumes.
Well covered Prowsey
Excellent covering from Ward-Prowse at the back post. He links with McCarthy and clears up the opposite end where Shane Long beats Alisson to the ball, he plays it back for Djenepo who can't latch onto it.
Oxlade-Chamberlain cuts inside to open the scoring for the hosts. Just moments before Danny Ings had worked his way into the Liverpool box, and looked to have been clipped by Fabinho, nothing given.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (46’) | 1 – 0
The teams are out
Both sides have retaken to the field at Anfield. Jordan Henderson is going to get us under way for the second half...
Bossing it 👊
James Ward-Prowse in action in the first half at Anfield.
HALF-TIME: Liverpool 0-0 Saints
Plenty of encouraging signs for Ralph Hasenhüttl's side during an entertaining first period. Goalless at the break, but a good watch nonetheless.
Chances aplenty at the end of the half. Ings attempt is thwarted by Alisson once more, and he had Djenepo for company in the middle, had he been able to squeeze a pass towards him. Two corners to end the first 45 minutes, both cleared.
Ending on top
Redmond with another effort on the Liverpool goal, this time it's off target. It was crafted by Ings, with a lovely headed knockdown. There's something in this for Saints, if they can take their chances.
Long goes close
Saints ending the half strongly. A poor clearance from Gomez was seized upon by the striker, who struck a fierce shot at Alisson, which is saved. There's been openings for the visitors, which should provide encouragement.
Approaching half time
Djenepo has come closest for Saints. But Ings has just tested Alisson, wriggling free in the area and getting a shot away. The keeper was helped out by his defenders.
Romeu concedes a free-kick for a foul on Oxlade-Chamberlain in a precarious position. Salah and TAA over it. Five in a wall for Saints. They do their job and get a block in.
Redmond tries his luck
Nice move from Saints. Ends with a shot from Redders, which takes a deflection and goes for a corner. Swung in by Bertrand and attacked by a melee of players but the referee blows for an infringement.
van Dijk audacious
The centre-half actually tried to back flick the ball into the net. Producing a good save from McCarthy, and a follow up save from Firmino on the rebound. Ball is worked into the box once more and Liverpool claim a penalty, nothing doing.
Djenepo had flung his body on the line to prevent he shot from Oxlade-Chamberlain, but he got it away. McCarthy intervened - goes for a corner.
He took the shot on from distance, and it tested Alisson. There was plenty of movement on the effort, and the Liverpool stopper palms for a corner.
Long concedes free-kick
Quickly taken by Liverpool and worked into the box by Fabinho. It's Wijnaldum who ends up taking the shot, but he's marshalled by Bednarek well. McCarthy picks up the pieces.
Djenepo tussling with Fabinho down the right. He's now switched to the left, with Nathan Redmond occupying the right flank.
The ball bounced up and hit Salah's arm in the preamble - Saints should have a free-kick - but it's a Liverpool corner nevertheless. TAA delivers to the near post, and it's cleared for another corner. Long eventually clears to safety.
TAA on the attack
The full-back was on the charge down the left, and attempted to whip a ball centrally where Firmino was lurking. Slightly skewed the cross and McCarthy was happy to watch it onto the roof of his net.
The manager pitchside at Anfield. Solid opening, Saints containing the hosts. Working hard to create opportunities on the break.
Let's go, Saints!
Pass back? 🤔
Saints on the attack with Nathan Redmond, ball gets worked to Djenepo who over runs it. Robertson recovers and plays the ball back to Allison, who curiously picks it up. Nothing given.
Superb anticipation from Prowsey, to run Saints clear. He plays a ball down the right for Shane Long to run onto, but he's beaten to it by van Dijk. Danny Ings closes down Alisson - close!
Flies high and wide. It's windy around Anfield, and the flight of the delivery just caught a gust as it was being kicked. McCarthy watches it out.
Ward-Prowse at full-back
In the absence of Yan Valery, and after Cédric's departure, James Ward-Prowse is filling in at right full-back, just as he did against Leicester. Oriol Romeu comes into midfield.
