WOL vs SOU As It Happened
Key moments so far
- Substitute Cavaleiro fires Wolves in front late on, before Jonny seals the win
- McCarthy makes early save from Jonny as hosts start brightly
- Elyounoussi denied by Patricio as Saints enjoy good spell either side of half time
- Wolves start a Premier League campaign with same XI for a record seventh successive match
19.09on too many occasions we've done ok in away games, but not got what we've deserved, and that was an example today. i think we've had more possession and more shots on goal, so it's not as if we've sat back and waited for our fate to be decided.

19.06FULL TIME: Wolves 2-0 Southampton
It's a disappointing day in the end for Saints, who were well in the game right up until substitute Ivan Cavaleiro made an instant impact off the bench, pouncing to break the deadlock 12 minutes from time. Any chance of a late revival was extinguished by Jonny, who soon doubled the lead as Wolves took full advantage of the shift in momentum. Saints had their moments, but the first goal was vital.
Patricio claims Bertrand's cross
Saints have applied some pressure in the closing stages, but it's relieved by Patricio, who catches Bertrand's deep cross to the delight of a buoyant home crowd.
Gabbiadini denied by Patricio
The Italian is forced away from goal on his right foot, and does well to hit the target, but the keeper is well positioned at his near post to make a fairly routine save.
Five minutes to be added...
It seems a long way back for Saints now, but with five added minutes there is still time...
Jonny makes it two
The two Wolves wing-backs combine to deadly effect, as Doherty sets up Jonny, who escapes Vestergaard and plants a low shot between the legs of McCarthy from close range.
GOAL
Jonathan Castro Otto (86’) | 2 – 0

Hoedt makes superb saving tackle
Saints are temporarily exposed as Vestergaard concedes possession, but Hoedt races across to halt Jimenez in his tracks. Wolves have their tails up now.
Stunning save from McCarthy
Wow. Moutinho's cross from the left is met by a header from Jimenez destined for the top corner, but McCarthy somehow stretches out a big right hand to make a brilliant stop, and keep Saints in contention.
Bertrand's shot is blocked
The left-back fires towards the bottom corner, but it's well blocked and deflected behind for a corner, which Wolves defend.
The substitute makes the breakthrough 😩
It's an immediate impact for Cavaleiro. Traoré bursts down the right and crosses low, Jimenez lays it off and Cavaleiro fires home from 15 yards. Saints must respond quickly now.
GOAL
Ivan Cavaleiro (78’) | 1 – 0

Patricio saves from Armstrong
Cédric overlaps Redmond and crosses from the right, picking out Armstrong, who shoots on the turn but it's too close to Patricio.
Yellow Card for Adama Traoré (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
Traoré, despite being in possession, goes over the top with his studs raised and catches Redmond. Perhaps not intentional but dangerous nonetheless.
Vestergaard has a go from distance
When Saints are awarded a free-kick 35 yards out, Vestergaard takes the responsibility and fancies a shot at goal. It's a decent effort, too, that Patricio needs two attempts to gather.
The game is opening up 👀
We're midway through the second half at Molineux. It may be goalless, but the game is becoming more and more stretched, with an opener looking increasingly likely. But who will strike first?
Austin shoots wildly
The ball drops to Austin near the left corner of the box, and the striker instinctively tries his luck on the half-volley, when Redmond was better placed on the outside. Another sign that Saints are growing in confidence, even if the strike was well off target.
Good spell from Saints...
This is good stuff from the visitors. After a spell of sustained possession, Ings looks to turn on a low cross from Redmond, but can't quite get a shot away and the ball goes behind for a corner, which Vestergaard heads wide. This is encouraging!
Yellow Card for Jonathan Castro Otto (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
Jonny goes into the book for bringing down Ings as he halts a Saints counter-attack.
He's back!
Lemina has returned to the field of play, and Saints have a full complement again.
We're back under way at Molineux!
We've experienced some connection issues here, but the second half has so far passed without incident and we're back into the action!
HALF TIME: Wolves 0-0 Southampton
It's goalless at the interval, but Saints have improved as the first half has progressed. After a tricky opening 15 minutes when Wolves carried the greater threat, the visitors have settled into the game nicely. Mohamed Elyounoussi was denied by Rui Patricio, while Alex McCarthy had to be alert to deny Jonny at the other end.
Jimenez heads over
Jimenez is the target again, as this time Moutinho delivers from a deeper position, but the Mexican cannot keep his header down and McCarthy is unflustered by the chance.
Jimenez tests McCarthy
Suddenly Wolves are coming back into the game with half time approaching. Neves sends a searching diagonal pass out to the right where Doherty is waiting to cross. Jimenez shoots sharply first time, but it's straight at McCarthy, who stoops to save.
Neves shoots wide
A rare breakaway for Wolves sees Jimenez feed the onrushing Neves, but his shot from 20 yards is waved past the post by McCarthy. It's noticeable that the home team are not shy in going for goal from any angle, but they haven't found their range so far.
Ings goes close!
Ings has not seen much of the ball so far, but the striker looks sharp as he sets his sight from 25 yards. His shot takes a deflection and sails only just wide.
Much better from Saints 💪
Having struggled in the opening 10-15 minutes, the visitors have really come into the game. Suddenly Wolves look a little shaky at the back, and chances are starting to come. Keep it up, lads!
Patricio denies Elyounoussi!
Best chance for Saints! Redmond plays a delightful ball in behind the defence and Elyounoussi is there, but Patricio advances and leaves the Norwegian little to aim at. He tries to lift the ball over the keeper, but he stands up to make an important save.
Austin shoots wide
Austin collects the ball 30 yards out and drives towards goal before hitting an attempted shot that Ings tries to redirect goalwards, but he can't get a substantial contact and Wolves escape.
No free-kick, ref? 🤷♂️
Højbjerg embarks on a jinking run towards the penalty area, before he stumbles to a halt just outside the box. The home fans are angered by an alleged dive, while Saints want the free-kick which is not forthcoming. Still goalless here at Molineux.
Bennett denied by McCarthy
Big defender Bennett gets his head to a Wolves corner, but his downward header is gathered by McCarthy.
Vestergaard stops Jota
Saints look to be in trouble when Jota nutmegs Vestergaard and appears to have a clear route to goal, but the winger can't reach the ball on the other side, claiming obstruction against the big Dane. Referee Stuart Attwell awards a free-kick, leaving Wolves aggrieved there is no card, but contact seemed minimal.
Elyounoussi forces a save!
Better from Saints, who attack quickly through Redmond and Austin, who holds the ball up and waits for the run of Elyounoussi. The Norwegian takes the ball in his stride and shoots low from 20 yards, but there's not enough power in it to really trouble Patricio in the Wolves goal.
Wolves on the front foot
It's been a tough start for Saints. Jonny's shot is the only clear-cut chance to date, but Mark Hughes is urging his players to push up and the hosts will be encouraged with the opening 12 minutes.
McCarthy saves from Jonny
Wolves work the ball into the box and the cutback from the right finds Jonny stepping on to it to strike first time, but McCarthy is there to make the first save of the game, parrying to safety.
Moutinho fires over
Another rather speculative effort from one of Wolves' Portuguese stars, but Moutinho is equally optimistic as Neves and his shot from 30 yards sails over.
Doherty heads wide
Another set-piece for Wolves, this time in a crossing position on the left side of the box. Neves delivers and Doherty heads well wide of target.
Neves tries his luck from long range
It's a free-kick to Wolves 30 yards out. It would take something special to beat McCarthy from such distance, but it's enough to bring the home fans to their feet in anticipation as star midfielder Ruben Neves prepares to strike. In the end it's a tame effort into the wall.
