Report: Saints fall to Spurs defeat at Wembley
Early goals in each half proved decisive as Southampton fell to a 3-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley. Our report.
22.06FULL-TIME: Spurs 3-1 Saints
Goals from Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son clinch all three points at Wembley Stadium. Saints threatened for much of the second period, but didn't get their just rewards, despite Charlie Austin netting a consolation goal in stoppage time. The damage had unfortunately already been done. 😔
21.52Austin pulls one back
The substitute forward races onto a ball over the top from Steven Davis, drives forward after evading the offside trap, and is cool and clinical in front of goal, firing into the far side of the net.
GOOOAL!!!
Charlie Austin (+3’) | 3 – 1
Woodwork again 😭
That's another chance that has come off the crossbar! Elyounoussi's header this time, again crashes off the underside. Before Austin has a chance...
Austin heads wide
The striker has managed to get some good direction on it, but not enough power as it flies marginally wide. Not Saints' day in front of goal, despite some well crafted openings!
Possession game
Saints have seen 60% of the ball in the last ten minutes, but haven't been able to find the net - not for the want of trying! There's been some outstanding goalkeeping from Spurs' No.1...
Austin thwarted
Charlie Austin this time, on the swivel, forces yet another save from Lloris. Eric Dier's attempted block had caused an awkward deflection, but nothing seems to be able to beat Spurs' stopper tonight.
Højbjerg and Prowsey denied
Lloris at full stretch again! It's a superb double save, Højbjerg hits the shot with enough pace that the keeper is forced to parry and Prowsey is alive to the rebound. But Spurs' World Cup winner is again equal to it... 😩
Armstrong ideas
The midfielder is seeing plenty of the ball in this spell. He attempts to lift it towards Austin, forcing a corner, which is pulled back to Matt Targett - but he's unable to keep his effort down as it sails over the bar.
On the attack
Redmond advances down the right. The ball falls to Steven Davis, kindly, and he swept it square to Ward-Prowse, who hit it first time but the shot was blocked. Perhaps the better decision would have been for Davis to take it on himself, given his position in the area...
Saints' turn to threaten
Some nice interlinking play between Cèdric and Gabbiadini. The striker attempts to fumble the ball forward, having been shutdown by a blockade of defenders, before Redmond is fouled. Prowsey takes the free-kick, and it's a good one, but Yoshida can't untangle his feet in time to divert it goalward.
Redderz hits the crossbar 😩
Saints straight up the other end, looking to atone for Spurs' quick-fire double. Redmond whips the ball goalwards, with Lloris beaten, but it crashes off the crossbar.
Son adds a third
Harry Kane presented the forward with the easiest of finishes, delivering an inviting ball across the box and allowing Son to apply the telling touch from close range.
GOAL
Heung-Min Son (55’) | 3 – 0

Moura doubles the Londoners' lead
The forward gets two bites at the cherry. The first is charged down by Yoshida and co, but the ball falls fortuitously to Moura once more, and he makes no mistake with the second chance. He hits it into the turf, and it nestles in the far corner.
GOAL
Lucas Rodrigues Moura da Silva (51’) | 2 – 0

Eriksen fouled
Davis is adjudged to have been too heavy handed with the Dane on the edge of the area. He'll take the resulting free-kick, which is on target, but McCarthy is equal to it. Alive and alert, the keeper dives to his right and pushes to safety.
Second 45...
We're back underway at Wembley. Spurs' first activity - a corner. Which is clawed away awkwardly by McCarthy. A nervy start from Saints, but good reactions from the keeper.
HALF-TIME: Spurs 1-0 Saints
Harry Kane's ninth minute opener is the difference at the break. The visitors have had a couple of half chances - the best of which fell to Højbjerg, who forced a superb save from Hugo Lloris. Fine margins...
1️⃣ min added...
We're in time added on in the first half. Saints have just successfully defended a couple of Spurs corners, and look to be heading into the break with a one goal deficit.
Eriksen on target
McCarthy gathers at the second attempt. The Dane had worked the ball onto his favoured foot, and hit it on the bounce, but Saints' goalkeeper was able to collect, with lurker Kane looking to pounce.
Spurs' diagonal
The hosts are making good use of the cross-field pass from Alderweireld, who is finding Trippier in space far too regularly. The full-back is gaining plenty of joy down the right, and Saints will need to keep a watchful eye on the forward movement of the full-back...
👋 The boss
Ralph Hasenhüttl watches on from the stands at Wembley.
Son threatens again
The South Korean is causing real problems. He charges forwards, and lets fire from roughly 22 yards. The effort was straight down the throat of McCarthy, who palms over.
Son leads the break
He feeds the ball into the path of scorer Kane, who hits it, without any real purchase. McCarthy gathers and sends Saints on the attack...
Gabbi threatens...
Again that same run in behind from Gabbiadini - but this time, it's effective. He lays the ball off to Højbjerg, who strikes it first time, with real venom, and forces a sublime fingertip save from Lloris. The Frenchman touches it onto the post, before Armstrong fails to control the rebound.
Prowsey looks for Gabbi...
The ball is lifted over the top from the midfielder, with Gabbiadini on the run. Foyth recovers and heads away, but there's been a few times where the striker has - nearly - gleaned joy from a similar type of pass.
Cèdric clears
More smart build up play from the hosts, but Cèdric intervenes. Moura and Kane continue to link well, but if Saints are patient, there looks to be chances at the opposite end also.
Højbjerg down...
The midfielder took a clattering from Danny Rose, but is back on his feet after treatment. Moura picks the pocket of Steven Davis moments after, and tries his luck from distance, but McCarthy backtracks and collects comfortably. It was audiacious, from inside his own half.
Armstrong in the mood...
The in-form midfielder links well with Gabbiadini, who had unfortunately strayed offside. The striker fed the ball back to Armstrong, before the flag was raised. The build up play, nonetheless, was encouraging.
Spurs take the lead
A quick corner catches Saints unawares, as Eriksen fires a low delivery across goal, which is anticipated by Harry Kane, on the move, and turned home from all of three yards.
GOAL
Harry Kane (9’) | 1 – 0

Moura released by Alderweireld
The winger wins a corner off Cèdric, which is taken short to Eriksen. Harry Kane makes the run across the face of goal, and latches onto the cross...
Cédric fires wide
Fresh from firing a stunning free-kick against Man United at the weekend, the full-back lets rip from distance at Wembley. Shot flies a couple of yards wide.
Son fires warning shot
The forward strikes it on the volley, after Kieran Trippier's nod down, and Alex McCarthy scrambles across to get something on the ball, as it rebounds off the post.
We're under way...
Saints in possession as we get started at Wembley. The visitors look to have reverted to four at the back, with Steven Davis and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg screening in front.
