FULL-TIME: Saints 0-0 Newcastle

No way through. It ends goalless at St Mary's on an afternoon dominated by the home side. One point each for Saints and Newcastle.

+2’

Ward-Prowse delivers, no connection...

That is a fabulous delivery from James Ward-Prowse from out wide. The midfielder's free-kick arches beautifully into the area but is missing a killer touch from a team-mate.

FIVE minutes added time to come

C.O.Y.R.

89’

CHANCE! LONG!

This should have been it. Huge chance for Saints, substitute Shane Long sweeps wide of the target when found unmarked on the edge of the box.

88’

Yedlin wildly over the bar

A collective intake of breath at St Mary's as a deep free-kick is headed back across the Saints goalmouth. The home defence clear as far as Yedlin who smashes one into orbit.

FINAL 🔟 at St Mary's

...and Mark Hughes is pointing exactly where it needs to go. Lemina has just driven over the bar for Saints as we edge ever closer to the 90 here.

79’

Newcastle United substitution: Yoshinori Muto replaces Christian Atsu

That's your lot for Newcastle as far as subs go. Atsu is on, Muto is off.

Southampton substitution: James Ward-Prowse replaces Oriol Romeu

...and James Ward-Prowse takes the place of the returning Romeu.

Southampton substitution: Shane Long replaces Mohamed Elyounoussi

Double switch for Saints!

Long is on for Elyounoussi...

15 to play at St Mary's

One goal wins this game, you would imagine. For the majority of the afternoon, Saints have looked the most likely to score it...

75’

Newcastle United substitution: Sung-yueng Ki replaces Mohamed Diamé

A second change on the way for Rafa Benitez's men as Ki comes on for Diamé.

71’

Gabbiadini off target

He's been lively since coming off the bench and Gabbi fancies himself from distance here, sending a dipping shot bouncing harmlessly past the far post.

68’

Newcastle United substitution: Salomón Rondón replaces Ayoze Pérez Gutiérrez

A roar from the visiting supporters behind the goal as Rondon takes the place of Perez.

66’

REDMOND! 😖 CÉDRIC! 😖

Backs to the wall for the time being for Newcastle as Saints pepper Dubravka's goal. Efforts from Redmond and Cédric hit a blue wall with the away defence at sixes and sevens. Surely there's a goal coming?

64’

Elyounoussi drags a shot wide

Immediate impact from Gabbiadini: the Italian wins the ball in the air, guiding it into the path of Elyounoussi who drags his effort wide on the angle.

62’

Southampton substitution: Manolo Gabbiadini replaces Charlie Austin

First switch on the way as Manolo Gabbiadini scurries on to replace Austin!

Ings on the charge!

Danny Ings is a man on a mission: the striker plucks McCarthy's high kick out of the air on his chest, collects the return pass from Romeu and twice sees goalbound shots blocked in the box. Tempo rising once more...

56’

Flag's up, won't count

Saints have the ball in the net but it'll be a Newcastle free-kick after Charlie Austin is adjudged to have jumped unfairly with Dubravka for a loose ball.

51’

OHHH, DANNY!

Still Saints press at the start of the half. The skipper slides a lovely pass into the area for Ings who loses his footing at the crucial moment and sees his shot deflected wide off Charlie Austin.

47’

COME ON, SAINTS!

Saints push forward at the home crowd responds in kind! Redmond does superbly down the right to dig out a cross for Austin whose knockdown for Elyounoussi is well read by Fernandez.

The second half is under way

Back to it, Saints! 45 minutes to find a way through!

HALF-TIME: Saints 0-0 Newcastle

Saints have had by far the better of this first half but the two teams go in level at the interval. Chances for Stephens, Elyounoussi, Austin and Lemina have all come and gone.

Elyounoussi and Stephens! 😖

Two openings to go in at the break in front! Elyounoussi curls wide after cutting in from the left before Dubravka flies to his right to push away Stephens's header.

40’

LEMINA OFF THE POST!

Best move of the game. Saints sweep from right to left starting with Ings's clever flick through the legs of Shelvey. Redmond crosses low to the near post towards Lemina, the midfielder helps the ball onto the base of the post...

Ings sliding in 😱

It's been a messy past 10 minutes at St Mary's but Saints almost strike from nowhere. Cédric crosses for Ings arriving at pace into the box but he can't direct his effort on target...

Midfield battle

Plenty of this 👆in the first half without the flair in the final third to go with it. No lack of commitment from either side but it remains goalless 10 minutes from the interval.

30’

Super Cédric

Excellent defending here from the Portuguese full-back. Muto scurries forward and finds Kenedy who checks inside and slams a shot into the legs of the sliding Cédric.

27’

Stephens sweeps up ahead of Ritchie

Newcastle come again, once more through Muto. The Japanese nips ahead of Hoedt down the left flank and squares for Ritchie who is denied by the covering Jack Stephens.

24’

Half-chance for Newcastle

A first real sniff of danger for the Magpies: Jonjo Shelvey's corner is helped on by Federico Fernandez to the back post where Yoshinuri Muto is waiting to spin and shoot into the side-netting on the turn.

20’

Redmond arrows over

Better from Saints who transition quickly through midfield and almost catch the away side napping. Danny Ings feeds Redmond on the right side of the box and the winger spanks a shot just over the top of the bar.

Visitors settling down

A nervy start for Newcastle, on the back of a good one for Saints, is starting to ease now as we approach the quarter-hour mark. The visitors in possession for now without posing any real threat on Alex McCarthy's goal.

Elyounoussi ❌

This is how close Moi came to giving us the lead... the Norwegian was fortunate to find the ball at his feet after the wild deflection on Bertrand's shot but 'keeper Dubravka did superbly to keep him out.

8’

All Saints so far!

Strong start from the home side here. Elyounoussi and Charlie Austin have both tested Newcastle's Martin Dubravka is the opening stages. Let's keep this up and the tempo high!

3’

Moi denied by Dubravka!

Ryan Bertrand's shot spins kindly into the path of Moi Elyounoussi in the box. The Norwegian is completely free but can only shoot straight at the onrushing Magpies goalkeeper!

We haven't picked up enough points, that's a fact. at the same time, we've outperformed our  opponents in most of the games this season with exception to chelsea and liverpool. we need to male that count today.

It's been a good week; i think we took a lot of confidence from the way we played at bournemouth. the only disappointment on the day is that we didn't take the chances we created."
