FULL TIME: Southampton 2-2 Manchester United

It's all over at St Mary's, where a frantic first half gave way to a less eventful second. Stuart Armstrong's fizzing low shot and Cédric's perfectly-placed free-kick had Saints 2-0 to the good, but back came United to level things up at the interval through Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera, both set up by Marcus Rashford. No further goals after the break, and the points are shared.

+5’

Yellow Card for Stuart Armstrong (Southampton)

That's a bit of a wild one from Armstrong, and United have one more chance to put the ball in the box.

+4’

Gabbiadini fires over

The Italian fancied his chances and hits it with power, but it's always too high to trouble De Gea.

+3’

Free-kick for Saints...

We're into the dying embers of this game and Saints have a free-kick 35 yards from goal. Too far to shoot?

+1’

Southampton substitution: Steven Davis replaces Mario Lemina

Last change of the day is a straight swap in the Saints midfield.

Sponsored by Utilita

90’

Four added minutes...

We're into stoppage time. United have a free-kick near the left corner of the penalty area, but it's easily taken by McCarthy.

5️⃣ to go... ⏳

Saints are finishing the stronger team. Can we find a winner? 🤞

86’

Manchester United substitution: Jesse Lingard replaces Romelu Lukaku

Final United change sees Lingard introduced for Lukaku, who was down receiving treatment a couple of minutes ago.

Sponsored by Utilita

83’

Crucial block from Herrera

Gabbiadini receives the ball in prime shooting range on the edge of the box, but across comes Herrera with a brave block. That shot was travelling.

81’

Redmond denied by De Gea!

Great strike from Redmond, who has a go from distance and the retreating De Gea has to tip it over. From the resulting corner, Højbjerg heads wide at the near post. Saints are not sitting on a draw here at all.

80’

Last warning for Pogba?

Pogba and Lemina get into another tussle, and the Saints man is fouled. The hosts try to get on with the free-kick quickly, but the referee wants time to have a word with Pogba. He's made a couple of fouls since being booked. Was that a final warning?

77’

Manchester United substitution: Anthony Martial replaces Marcus Rashford

Slightly surprising to see Rashford sacrificed, but the in-form Martial is on with 15 minutes to go.

Sponsored by Utilita

76’

Højbjerg tries his luck

Space opens up in front of the skipper, who is not shy in shooting from 30 yards plus. He hits it well, but De Gea is rarely beaten from such range, and makes a relatively comfortable save diving to his right.

74’

Redmond shoots over

The winger remains a threat, but this time he runs across the face of the penalty area and shoots off target on his left foot.

74’

Safe hands from McCarthy

Having switched to the left, Young runs at Valery and crosses low, but McCarthy shows excellent handling to hold on and prevent a tap-in in front of him.

72’

Manchester United substitution: José Diogo Dalot Teixeira replaces Luke Shaw

Dalot comes on to replace Shaw, meaning Young will switch from the right flank to the left.

Sponsored by Utilita

2️⃣0️⃣ minutes to go...

It remains 2-2 here at St Mary's, as it was at half time. Who will make themselves a hero?

69’

Pogba attempts an overhead kick

The midfielder takes down a cross on his chest and lines up an overhead kick, but it's fairly routine for McCarthy to take a couple of steps to his right and make the save.

68’

Gabbiadini tests De Gea

First contribution from Gabbiadini is to receive a clever pass from Armstrong and let fly with a sharp shot, but it's too close to the United keeper.

66’

Great stuff from Stephens!

Pogba shrugs off Højbjerg and looks for another sliding pass to Lukaku, but across comes Stephens to intercept, before he slides in to dispossess Shaw as well.

64’

First change for Saints...

That's Obafemi's last action, as Gabbiadini comes on in his place. It's a standing ovation for the 18-year-old on his first Premier League start.

63’

Was that a penalty?

Armstrong's low cross reaches Obafemi with his back to goal, who is brought down by McTominay from behind, but the defender is adjudged to have won the ball, and penalty appeals fall on deaf ears.

61’

Shaw fires wide

A United corner finds its way through to Shaw on the edge of the box, who strikes the ball really cleanly with his right foot, but it veers away from goal and is never troubling McCarthy.

59’

Yellow Card for Jannik Vestergaard (Southampton)

Vestergaard is the next man to be carded after McTominay flicks the ball past him.

58’

De Gea saves from Redmond

After neat footwork from Obafemi wins Saints a free-kick, Redmond's shot is safely caught by De Gea at his near post.

55’

Great defending from Cédric

Saints temporarily look exposed as Pogba tries to thread the eye of a needle to feed Lukaku, but across comes Cédric to intervene with a timely sliding tackle.

54’

Yellow Card for Mario Lemina (Southampton)

Another booking - this time to Lemina for some retribution on Pogba.

53’

Yellow Card for Paul Pogba (Manchester United)

It's a booking for Pogba for a late challenge on Lemina.

52’

Fellaini goes close

Young delivers a free-kick from wide on the right, Fellaini goes up and meets it with a powerful header that flies just a yard or two wide.

48’

Early United pressure

A couple of early corners for the visitors, who have got a spring in their step. McCarthy is impeded from the second and Saints can clear their lines from the free-kick.

45’

United get the action back under way

The second half is up and running... which way will the pendulum swing next?

HALF TIME: Southampton 2-2 Manchester United

It's been breathless stuff at St Mary's, where Saints stormed into a two-goal lead. First, Stuart Armstrong arrowed a low drive across David De Gea and inside the far post, before Cédric broke his Premier League duck with an expertly-taken free-kick. But back came United, as Marcus Rashford set up to Romelu Lukaku, before the England man provided another assist for Ander Herrera's cheeky backheel.

+1’

McCarthy holds on

After a quick break from the visitors, Saints get back to hold up the attack, before Herrera tries his luck from 25 yards and shoots straight into the arms of the waiting McCarthy.

45’

Two minutes to be added...

United are in the ascendancy with half time approaching.

It's all square at St Mary's

Where has this come from? United draw level as Rashford bursts down the right and cuts the ball back for Herrera, whose backheel squirms beyond McCarthy to level things up.

39’

GOAL

Ander Herrera (39’) | 2 2

38’

Højbjerg shoots over

This time nothing for De Gea to worry about, as Højbjerg's free-kick sails over the top.

37’

Another free-kick in a promising position...

Højbjerg was just pulled back by Herrera and Saints have another opportunity to shoot from a set-piece. This time it's just right of centre.

35’

Yellow Card for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (Southampton)

The skipper goes into the book for catching Pogba in midfield.

Lukaku gets one back...

The visitors are back in it at St Mary's, as Rashford finds strike partner Lukaku to his left, who takes the ball in his stride with a clinical finish over the onrushing McCarthy.

32’

GOAL

Romelu Lukaku (32’) | 2 1

What a feeling 😍

Becoming a familiar sight... goalscorer Stuart Armstrong wheels away in celebration after his third strike in a week ⚽️⚽️⚽️

28’

Rashford skies a shot

That was a long way over, as the ball falls invitingly for Rashford 25 yards out, but the England man gets right underneath it. More cheers from the Saints fans.

27’

Crucial interception from Yoshida

One incisive pass from Shaw into Pogba suddenly opens up the pitch for United, but as the Frenchman looks to release Rashford, Yoshida comes across to make a vital interception. Excellent defending.

25’

McTominay heads over

A brief spell of United pressure, as Young picks up the ball from a corner on the far side and delivers a cross met by McTominay, who heads over under pressure in the air.

23’

Crunching tackle from Valery!

This is great to see, as Valery blocks Shaw with a full-blooded tackle to take the ball away from the former Saint, generating a huge cheer for his efforts.

GOALSCORER 2 Cédric

What a free-kick!

St Mary's erupts for a second time, as Cédric sends the free-kick sailing over the wall and dipping back down just underneath De Gea's crossbar. Incredible stuff - what a way for the defender to score his first Premier League goal!

19’

GOOOAL!!!

Cédric (19’) | 2 0

18’

Yellow Card for Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

Rashford goes into the book for tripping Lemina. It's a free-kick in shooting range...

18’

Saints full of intensity

That goal has really brought the home crowd to life, and the players are responding. Saints are first to everything, while United's change in formation just seems to have sparked confusion.

GOALSCORER 17 Stuart Armstrong

Armstrong again!!!

What a finish! Saints take the lead with a brilliant opener, as Redmond teases the United defence and finds Obafemi, who has the awareness to spot Armstrong to his right. The Scot takes one touch and rifles an unstoppable low shot across De Gea's despairing dive. Get in!

12’

GOOOAL!!!

Stuart Armstrong (12’) | 1 0

9’

Three at the back for United

There were some question marks surrounding the way United would start the game, with five orthodox midfielders in their line-up. It's actually a back three for the visitors, with Jones flanked by McTominay and Matić. Certainly unorthodox positions for those two.

8’

Pace on the break for Saints 🏃‍♂️

Saints are leaving Redmond forward with Obafemi as a pair, and they break with real purpose before the 18-year-old's shot is blocked. Utilising the quick counter-attack is a clear game plan already.

5’

Redmond shoots wide

A positive response from Saints, as Redmond surges forward and tries his luck from distance, but doesn't really get hold of his shot and it runs harmlessly wide.

4’

Lukaku denied after defensive mix-up

A nervy start. McCarthy completely misses his clearance and time seemingly stands still as Rashford takes advantage to backheel the ball to Herrera, who is crowded out in the six-yard box. Eventually, it comes to Lukaku, whose shot is smothered by the recovering McCarthy.
