Key moments so far
- Saints beaten 3-1 at St Mary's by Liverpool
- Mo Salah and Jordan Henderson scored late on for visitors
- Shane Long had fired Southampton into an early lead
- Naby Keita levelled for Liverpool in the 36th minute with a header
FULL TIME: Southampton 1-3 liverpool
it's perhaps a cruel scoreline on saints, who were excellent for much of the night, but it's the title challengers who claim all three points here at st Mary's.
Yellow Card for Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)
the Liverpool midfielder is booked for a foul on Ryan Bertrand
henderson converts for liverpool
that might be it. Jordan Henderson is on the end of a low cross from Roberto firmino and he slots past Angus gunn to put Liverpool two clear.
GOAL
Jordan Henderson (85’) | 1 – 3

salah breaks the deadlock
mo salah breaks away on the counter and finishes inside the post from the edge of the area.
GOAL
Mohamed Salah Ghaly (79’) | 1 – 2

Yellow Card for Ryan Bertrand (Southampton)
the saints left-back is cautioned for taking too long over a throw-in.
attendance: 31,797
a great crowd and a great atmosphere at st Mary's for what has been a great match so far.
it's getting tense at st mary's
midway through the second half and Liverpool are now starting to press. this one remains on a knife-edge.
firmino misses a half chance
Roberto firmino is starting to come into this a little more. said mané gets to the byline and finds him with a cutback, but his contact isn't great and the ball dribbles wide.
gunn saves from firmino
a little spell of pressure from Liverpool ends with Roberto firmino firing straight at Angus gunn from 20 yards, with the saints keeper making the save.
keita penalty appeal dismissed
a big shout for a spot kick for Liverpool as naby keita is brought down in the area by Maya Yoshida. referee Paul Tierney says no penalty, but saints probably got a bit lucky there judging by the replay!
long off target from distance
Shane long finds himself in space 30 yards out, but his right-footed effort is comfortably off target. another moment of threat from the hosts, though, who continue to be on the front foot.
vestergaard heads wide
James ward-prowse's corner is met by the head of Southampton's giant danish defender, but his effort drifts wide of the far post.
Redmond shot deflects wide
it's saints on the front foot again here. Nathan Redmond strikes a bouncing ball on the edge of the area and it deflects behind, before Liverpool clear the resulting corner.
Valery close to unlocking Liverpool defence
great work from Yan Valery to get free down the right, and he sends in a brilliant cross, but it's inches out of reach of the head of Nathan Redmond in the centre. a positive start to this half from saints too, though.
second half under way!
saints get us started again! let's do this, boys! 👊
half time: Southampton 1-1 liverpool
an excellent half from Ralph Hasenhüttl's side, who probably deserve to be in front. as it is, naby Keita's goal cancelled out Shane long's early opener and were level.
Redmond threatens down left
the saints forward gets to the byline and sends in a dangerous low cross, but it's turned away by his former teammate, Virgil van dijk.
Keita levels things up
it's cruel on saints, mo salah appeared to be offside in the initial build-up, with it eventually ending up with naby keita powering in a back-post header from Trent Alexander-arnold's cross.
GOAL
Naby Keita (35’) | 1 – 1

🔟 minutes to half-time
it's been an excellent half from Southampton so far, with Ralph Hasenhüttl's men fully deserving of their lead. can they keep it going until the interval?
firmino slices over
not much for Liverpool since the earlier save from Angus gunn. Roberto firmino tries his luck from the edge of the area with a volley, but it's a difficult one to hit and he slices it well off target.
Højbjerg shot from distance blocked
still saints are looking for that second. Pierre-emile højbjerg hits a well-struck half-volley from distance, but it's blocked on the edge of the area.
Redmond and bertrand linking well
these two have been a big threat already for the hosts down the left-hand side. keep it going, lads! 👊
long misses chance to double lead
a big opportunity for a second, as Ryan Bertrand blocks a Trent Alexander-arnold clearance and then is fed the ball by Nathan Redmond. Bertrand then delivers a low pass for an unmarked Shane long in the area, but he can't sort his feet out in time to make a proper contact on it.
longy celebrates! 📸
he loves a goal against Liverpool! a great moment for Shane long!
a huge save from gunn! 👐
saints nearly undone there, as mo salah clips a beautiful cross in for sadio mané, but Angus gunn turns his header from just outside the six-yard box away with a fine reaction save, before naby keita sends the rebound just wide from a tight angle.
saints still on top
the goal hasn't changed anything yet - it's still Southampton on the front foot. Nathan Redmond forces a corner, which comes to nothing ultimately, but more good intent from the hosts.
GET INNNNNNNN! LONGYYYYYYYYY!
YES! YES! YES! Ryan Bertrand crossed from a deep position on the left, with pierre-emile højbjerg flicking it on, and there's Shane long, who controls and finishes into the bottom corner from about ten yards out with his right foot.
GOOOAL!!!
Shane Long (8’) | 1 – 0
a positive start from saints
Liverpool's threat will no doubt arrive, but Ralph hasenhüttl will be pleased with the positive opening from his side so far.
dangerous move from saints...
Pierre-emile højbjerg dispossesses naby keita in midfield and finds Nathan Redmond down the left. he, in turn, uses Ryan Bertrand on the overlap, with his cross to the near post just out of the reach of Shane long, before its headed behind by Liverpool, who clear the resulting corner.
