What an afternoon at St Mary's!
17.07FULL TIME: Southampton 2-1 Everton
The final scoreline doesn't do justice to how dominant Southampton were, but the most important thing is that it's another huge three points for Ralph Hasenhüttl's men! GET IN!
A nervous finish now...
Gylfi Sigurdsson side-foots home from 18 yards as we go into four minutes of added time to halve the deficit for Everton.
GOAL
Gylfi Sigurdsson (90’) | 2 – 1

Long denied by Pickford
A brilliant move by Saints sees Stuart Armstrong find James Ward-Prowse on the right, who clips the ball into the middle for the run of Shane Long. He produces an excellent, first-time shot that's heading towards the far corner from 18 yards, but Jordan Pickford springs to his right and tips the ball wide.
Stephens almost makes it 3-0
Another great delivery from James Ward-Prowse, as his corner picks out Jack Stephens, whose thumping downward header flies just wide of the near post.
Smiles all round! 📸
Saints' second isn't Nathan Redmond's goal, but he's enjoyed it anyway!
Redmond can't convert
It's a chance for a third on the break for Saints, as Danny Ings launches a long pass over the top for Nathan Redmond. He gets onto it, then shifts it past the back-tracking Idrissa Gueye, but sends his subsequent shot well over the bar.
Yellow Card for Idrissa Gueye (Everton)
Everton have also picked up the first booking of the afternoon.
IT'S TWO!!
A bizarre goal for Saints, as Danny Ings tries to play Nathan Redmond through. It's not quite got as much on it as it should, causing Redmond to have to check. He's then tackled 25 yards out by Lucas Digne, with the ball flying forward and beating Jordan Pickford, as it finds the bottom corner. It's been credited to Redmond in the stadium, but it's going to go down as an own goal.
OWN GOAL!
Lucas Digne (63’) | 2 – 0
Bednarek back on...
The Saints centre-back has rejoined the action and looks to be ok.
Bednarek receiving treatment
Jan Bednarek has hurt himself after challenging for a header from a James Ward-Prowse free-kick moments ago. He's down in the Everton area being looked at following a hefty fall.
WHAT A STRIKE FROM PROWSEY! 🚀
We've got the lead, and what a goal it is! James Ward-Prowse pounces on a loose ball, drives infield and unleashes an unstoppable effort from 25 yards that flies into the top corner... OH YES!
GOOOAL!!!
James Ward-Prowse (49’) | 1 – 0
Sigurdsson denied by McCarthy
Nearly the opener for Everton, as Lucas Digne crosses from the left and Gylfi Sigurdsson sends a header towards the near top corner, but Alex McCarthy springs into action and tips it wide.
Muted appeals for an Everton spot kick
Ademola Lookman wants a penalty, claiming he was bundled over in the area by Oriol Romeu, but it looked pretty innocuous and referee Graham Scott agreed, letting play go on.
Second half is under way...
We're off and running once again. Let's find that opener, Saints! 👊
HALF TIME: Southampton 0-0 Everton
We've reached the break at St Mary's. Saints have been the better of the two sides, twice hitting the post, but there hasn't been a great deal of rhythm to the game so far.
Three minutes of added time
We're into stoppage time here at St Mary's, although there might be a little more added on than indicated, as Everton's Bernard is down receiving treatment.
Everton hit their own post!
Danny Ings produces some brilliant footwork to beat his man and burst into the area. Just as he's about to shoot with his left foot, Andre Gomes races back in to tackle him, but sends the ball past his own keeper. Unfortunately for Saints, it hits the post and comes back out, as Everton then clear it to safety.
Redmond inches away from the opener
A brilliant pass from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg sets Nathan Redmond racing away down the inside-left. As he gets into the area, he fires a left-footed shot towards the far corner, which beats Jordan Pickford, but clips the post and goes wide. So close!
Targett is back on!
After receiving treatment and leaving the pitch, Matt Targett is back on for Saints. He's moving a little gingerly right now, but he's out there again.
Targett down injured...
Some concern for Southampton here, as Matt Targett drops to the ground, appearing to hold his left knee. He's getting treatment from the club's medical staff on the pitch now, with play stopped.
Ings nearly breaks the deadlock
Jan Bednarek steps up and intercepts a pass before moving over halfway, looking up and chipping a beautiful ball in behind for the run of Danny Ings. He strikes the bouncing ball first-time from 25 yards, hitting it sweetly, but Jordan Pickford manages to get hands to it, looping it up into the air before gathering it.
Two superb blocks from Bednarek
We all know the danger Gylfi Sigurdsson can pose, and Everton work a nice opening for him just outside the edge of the box, but Jan Bednarek gets in the way of his first-time strike that's heading in the direction of the bottom corner. Moments late, Bednarek produces an even better block to deny Ademola Lookman, after Bernard had laid the ball to him in space inside the area. Great defending!
Valery's effort blocked
Nathan Redmond gets down the left and stands up a cross that ends up falling into the path of Yan Valery at the back post, but his side-footed effort from about ten yards is well blocked by Lucas Digne. Positive stuff again from Saints, though.
Saints denied by brilliant Pickford save
So close to an opener for Southampton, as James Ward-Prowse sends in a brilliant corner to the near post, with Danny Ings flicking a header towards the far corner, only for Jordan Pickford to dive brilliantly to his left and tip it away.
Højbjerg back in action! 💪
Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is back from a four-match ban and is captaining the side again. He's just gone close to sliding in Danny Ings too, with a clever pass from out on the left, but it just has a little too much pace on it, and is slightly out of the striker's reach, as a grateful Jordan Pickford collects.
Ward-Prowse fashions a shooting chance
A lovely move through midfield culminates in James Ward-Prowse playing the ball to Matt Targett down the left, before continuing his run to meet the left wing-back's resulting low cross. Ward-Prowse shifts the ball nicely onto his left foot to create space, but his strike across goal deflects wide for a corner, which Everton clear.
Three at the back for Saints
Ralph Hasenhüttl is going with three centre-backs again today, with Jack Stephens in the middle, Jannik Vestergaard to the left and Jan Bednarek to the right. Nathan Redmond is up alongside Danny Ings in attack, with the returning Pierre-Emile Højbjerg captaining the side and forming a central midfield three with Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse.
WE'RE UNDER WAY! 😇
Let's get these points, Saints!

Last time out in the league...
It was a big result for Saints last weekend, as they won 2-1 at Leicester City – a result that lifted them out of the relegation zone. James Ward-Prowse and Shane Long got the goals, and you can relive on the key moments from the game here.

As well as the suspended players returning, there was also some good news on the injury front this week, with Danny Ings back in contention, following a hamstring issue that kept him out of the past three matches.

Saints trio back from suspension
Some good news on the selection front for Ralph Hasenhüttl this week, as he has a trio of previously suspended players available again – Pierre-Emile Højbjerg's four-game ban is now over, while Charlie Austin and Yan Valery are also eligible once more.
11.57Back to the Premier League! 💪
It's matchday, as Southampton host Everton, at St Mary's. After the disappointment of Wednesday night's FA Cup exit to Derby on penalties, Ralph Hasenhüttl's men have a chance to bounce back. Confidence should still be high, though, after last Saturday's win at Leicester which lifted the team out of the drop zone. We'll be here all day with build-up, team news, live updates and free commentary.
