Key moments so far

  • Zohore scores in stoppage time as Cardiff retake the lead in high drama
  • Stephens pounced at the far post to poach 91st minute equaliser
  • Bamba scored from a corner to give Cardiff the lead at St Mary's
  • Saints' unbeaten league start to 2019 on the line

FULL TIME: Southampton 1-2 Cardiff City

What a crazy end to the game. Saints' unbeaten run is over in the most painful fashion. After Jack Stephens cancelled out Sol Bamba's opener in stoppage time, it seemed a point was the least the hosts would have to show for their efforts. Somehow, with seconds running out, Kenneth Zohore smuggled a low shot inside the far post to break Saints hearts as Cardiff leapfrog Ralph Hasenhüttl's men.

+6’

Yellow Card for Oriol Romeu (Southampton)

Romeu goes into the book and that should be it.

Unbelievable.

Zohore's low short squeezes inside the far post and Cardiff, somehow, are back in front. Quite extraordinary.

GOALSCORER 5 Jack Stephens

Jack to the rescue!

That's a big goal! Stephens is there at the far post to tap in the corner and Saints are level!

5️⃣ added minutes...

...and Saints have a corner! COME ON!

84’

Ward-Prowse tries his luck...

It was a free-kick in shooting range and the midfielder hits the target, but Etheridge is there again to tip the ball past the post.

83’

Gallagher replaces Valery

Can Sam make himself a hero?

82’

Cardiff City substitution: Víctor Camarasa replaces Oumar Niasse

Warnock opting to beef up his midfield for the closing stages.

82’

Gallagher preparing to come on

This will be Saints' final throw of the dice, as we move into the final ten minutes... 🙏

77’

How close can you get? 😩

Valery embarks on a brilliant solo run, forcing a save from Etheridge at the end of it. The rebound falls to Austin, whose shot is blocked on the line by Peltier, before Paterson throws himself in the way of Elyounoussi's follow up. Keep pushing, Saints!

73’

Bacuna tests McCarthy

A nervy moment for McCarthy. Bacuna's shot is well-struck and too hot for the Saints number one to handle. Another Cardiff corner.

72’

Southampton substitution: Mohamed Elyounoussi replaces Jannik Vestergaard

A more attacking switch, as Saints revert to a back four and Elyounoussi enters the fray.

71’

Southampton substitution: Charlie Austin replaces Shane Long

This may well have been a change Hasenhüttl would have made regardless of the goal, as Austin comes on to lead the line.

Cardiff make the breakthrough

This was not in the script. Paterson rises at the far post to nod down a corner, and Bamba is there to slide the ball home from close range to give the visitors a precious opener.

Austin readying himself

Ralph Hasenhüttl has given Charlie Austin the signal. He'll be coming on shortly, but first Saints have a corner to defend.

61’

Cardiff City substitution: Kenneth Zohore replaces Bobby De Cordova-Reid

It's a double change for the visitors, as Zohore adds his height into the attack.

61’

Cardiff City substitution: Leandro Bacuna replaces Aron Gunnarsson

That's Gunnarsson's last contribution, as Bacuna jogs on in his place.

60’

Yellow Card for Aron Gunnarsson (Cardiff City)

That's one yellow card apiece. Stephens lets the ball run across his body and Gunnarsson hacks at the back of his legs.

59’

Saints applying more pressure...

The noise levels rise inside St Mary's. Højbjerg can't find Redmond inside the box, but the supporters sense their team are getting closer 🤞

55’

Long fires wide

The striker drops deep to receive the ball and space opens up as he turns, but his shot veers away from goal and this time Etheridge is not called upon. Bright start to the second half from Saints!

53’

Valery forces another save

Positive play from the youngster, who turns inside the box and shoots hard, but it's straight into the chest of Etheridge, who holds on.

50’

Højbjerg denied by Etheridge

A skidding drive from the Dane forces the keeper into a stooping save down to his right. Let's keep the pressure on!

48’

Niasse receiving treatment

The on-loan Everton striker has been down for a couple of minutes now. Cardiff claim Romeu caught him in the face with a stray arm - no free-kick given, much to the frustration of Neil Warnock.

46’

We're back under way 💪

Saints immediately force a corner that Cardiff clear, Let's hope for a big 45!

HALF TIME: Southampton 0-0 Cardiff

Not much to report in between, but Saints started and finished the half in the ascendancy. It hasn't been a classic - maybe one goal will be enough?

+1’

Yellow Card for James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

Niasse gets away down the left touchline and Ward-Prowse gives the referee no option with a clear pull back.

45’

One added minute...

Another corner for Saints opens up the Cardiff defence, but Romeu doesn't get a good contact on his shot and the visitors clear.

44’

Crucial block by Manga

More encouraging signs. Another run by Redmond and this time he goes alone, into a shooting position on his left foot, but Manga sticks out a leg to deflect the ball behind for a corner.

42’

Another save!

Suddenly Saints burst into life, as Redmond's quick one-two with Long gets him into the box, where his cutback is sliced goalwards by Bamba, who is relieved to see Etheridge in the way.

40’

A shot on target 🙌

Some excitement for the crowd, as Højbjerg controls a dropping ball on his chest and volleys goalwards, but Etheridge falls on top of it to make a comfortable save.

34’

Bertrand gets to the byeline

Better from Saints, after a lull in the contest, as Bertrand bursts to the byeline and stands up a cross, but Etheridge claims.

2️⃣5️⃣ minutes gone...

It's been tight so far, as you might expect with so much at stake. Who will blink first?

22’

Gunnarsson shoots over

A rush of blood to the head from the Icelander, who registers Cardiff's first attempt at goal but it flies over from a long way out.

18’

Side-netting from Redmond...

The in-form winger chases a long pass forward, steps inside Bamba and shoots low, but it's wide of the near post. Saints are certainly the team taking the initiative so far 💪

15’

End to end stuff...

First attacking threat from Cardiff, as Gunnarsson hurls a long throw into the box. After Saints smuggle it to safety, Romeu's clipped pass picks out Højbjerg, but the Dane loses his bearings and his pass goes astray from a promising position.

12’

Nearly an own goal!

That's the closest we've come to an opener and it comes from the best move of the game. Stephens steps out of defence and feeds Bertrand on the left, whose low cross bounces around in the box and deflects narrowly wide of the post off a blue shirt. Relief for the visitors.

5’

It's noisy! 🔊

Both sets of fans are contributing to a lively atmosphere inside St Mary's! Neither team has yet created a notable chance, but we'll keep you updated with all the major talking points 👍
