Key moments so far
- Saints earn goalless draw at Chelsea in the Premier League
- Morata has the ball in the net for the hosts only to be flagged offside
- Armstrong and Romeu denied by Kepa in second half
- Eight changes for Hasenhüttl, including a Premier League debut for goalkeeper Gunn
FULL TIME: Chelsea 0-0 Southampton
It's all over at Stamford Bridge, where Saints have held on to secure a potentially crucial point. Angus Gunn was outstanding on his Premier League debut, albeit the hosts will feel they should have tested the youngster more extensively. Saints improved as an attacking threat in the second half, but couldn't break the deadlock. A valuable point! 👏
Alonso goes for goal again
This time he hits the target, but Gunn gets down quickly and crucially holds on to the ball with blue shirts closing in.
Alonso goes down...
The Spaniard wants a penalty for an alleged push in the back from Long, but referee Moss is having none of it. That's a BIG relief.
4️⃣ added minutes...
We're into stoppage time, as Alonso drills a hopeful shot over the bar from long range.
Brilliant tackle from Yoshida 👏
Chelsea are pushing now, as Kanté breaks into the box, but Yoshida comes across and slides in to dispossess the Frenchman. He had to get that right and he did. Great defending.
Cédric receiving treatment
The defender finds himself Saints' furthest forward player, but collides with Kepa in trying to beat him to the ball. The home fans aren't appreciating the break in play as he hobbles off.
The Saints fans enjoyed that...
Chelsea try to play their way out of trouble, but Loftus-Cheek's attempted flick doesn't come off and the ball rolls out for a Saints throw-in. Ironic cheers from the away end.
Yellow Card for Oriol Romeu (Southampton)
Romeu brings down Hazard and goes into the book.
Gunn to the rescue 💪
For once Saints are wide open and Chelsea launch a quick counter-attack through Loftus Cheek, who feeds Morata, but the striker's touch takes him a little wide and he's stretching on his left foot, which leads to a tame shot dealt with by Gunn.
Into the final 1️⃣5️⃣ minutes...
It's been an evenly contested second half - can anyone make the breakthrough?
Crucial touch from Yoshida
Morata has his sights set on a goal now. Kanté looks to put him through this time, but Yoshida stretches out a leg and gets the slightest touch to carry the ball through to Gunn.
Chelsea score 😨 but the flag is up 😅
Fàbregas's first act is to slide the ball through for Morata to finally beat Gunn, but the flag is up to deny the striker, and deadlock is quickly restored.
More pressure from Saints...
The visitors have posed much more attacking threat since half time. Ward-Prowse fizzes in a corner uncomfortably punched clear by Kepa, before his second delivery is headed to safety by Rüdiger.
Jorginho goes for goal
So often the playmaker from deep, Jorginho for once breaks forward and tries his luck from distance, His shot is cleanly struck but easily caught by Gunn.
Ward-Prowse hits the wall ❌
That was a free-kick in prime position for set-piece specialist Ward-Prowse, but the midfielder can only fire it into the Chelsea wall.
Romeu tests Kepa
Best spell of the game for Saints, as the travelling fans really find their voice. A loose ball drops to Romeu in the box, who catches it sweetly on the half-volley, but it's too close to Kepa who stoops to save.
Long tries his luck
Sloppy from Azpilicueta, who doesn't make many mistakes but this time passes straight to Ward-Prowse, who instantly finds Long. Space opens up ahead of the Irishman, who can't resist shooting from 25 yards, but it sails harmlessly over.
Gunn keeps Hazard at bay
First glimpse we've seen of Chelsea's star man in the second half, as Hazard skips inside from the left and shoots towards the near post, but Gunn is there to push the ball behind to safety and Saints clear the corner.
A fast bowler's run-up for Luiz...
The Brazilian lines up a free-kick in shooting territory, but after a big build-up he smacks it into the wall. It looked (and sounded) painful, but Saints won't mind.
More frustration for Chelsea
Barkley waits for the run of Hazard on his outside, but leaves the pass too late and the recipient is flagged offside. More groans from the home fans...
Armstrong involved again...
This time the Scot combines with Long on the touchline and gets beyond Rüdiger, but across comes Luiz to backheel his way out of trouble, much to the joy of the majority inside Stamford Bridge.
Armstrong goes close!
That's Saints' best moment of the game. Armstrong tries his luck from 20 yards with a shot that bounces awkwardly in front of Kepa, but the keeper is there to push it wide. Positive start to the second half! 💪
The second half is under way...
We're back into the action at Stamford Bridge!
HALF TIME: Chelsea 0-0 Southampton
Saints have contained their hosts with relative ease here, with Chelsea struggling to create meaningful opportunities. Premier League debutant Angus Gunn was called upon to deny Eden Hazard on the only occasion the Belgian has found space to shoot, before Yan Valery slid in to deflect Alvaro Morata's low effort wide of the post. The plan is working so far for Ralph Hasenhüttl and co.
2️⃣ added minutes...
We're into first-half stoppage time in west London.
Valery on the attack
Yoshida clips a lovely ball out to Valery wide on the right, who doesn't hesitate in taking on Alonso and beating him, but his low cross is cleared before it can reach Ings. Encouraging signs.
Alonso shoots wide
Saints clear a corner only as far as Alonso, who drills a low effort wide from the edge of the box. It takes a deflection on its way through, but no danger from the resulting corner.
Morata goes close...
That was close 😬 Barkley pokes the ball through for Morata, who looks to place one inside the far post. As Valery gets across to block, he diverts the ball towards the near post instead and the ball brushes the side-netting on its way wide.
Early impact from the substitute
Loftus-Cheek gets straight into the action with a jinking run down the right. He loses possession, but it does get the crowd excited, as they chant his name.
Time for drinks 🥤
There's a break in play as Willian receives treatment, and it seems the Brazilian is unable to continue. Saints take the opportunity to have a little team debrief and a breather.
Crucial save from Gunn!
That's the first big chance of the game, as Rüdiger's ball over the top catches Saints off guard and Hazard latches on to it. The ball sits up for the Belgian on his left foot, but Gunn stands tall and beats away his driven shot. That's why Saints must stay alert.
Yellow Card for Jan Bednarek (Southampton)
The Pole is the first man into the book for sliding in on Morata. Referee Jon Moss allows the Chelsea attack to continue before going back to card the defender.
It's all so quiet 🤫
Stamford Bridge is virtually silent, such is the lack of impetus from the home team so far. Saints are growing in belief, but must stay switched on defensively...
Vital block from Yoshida! ⛔️
Chelsea suddenly come to life as Willian races away down the right, cuts inside and lets fly, but Yoshida throws himself in the way and Gunn doesn't have to make a save. Great defending 👏
2️⃣0️⃣ minutes gone...
So far so good for Saints, who have restricted Chelsea to plenty of possession but no real end product as yet. The visitors are growing in confidence and carrying an increasing threat themselves.
Ings heads over
Better from Saints, who work the ball out to Cédric wide on the left. His cross picks out Ings near the penalty spot, whose header is only a couple of yards over.
Gunn races out
Chelsea try to release Hazard through the middle, but Gunn is quick off his line and clears the ball away from the Belgian.
Gunn denies Morata
First meaningful save for the Saints stopper, as Azpilicueta clips the ball in behind the defence for Morata, but Gunn gets down sharply to his right to deny the Spaniard's header.
Ward-Prowse fires over
After Vestergaard's ball over the top is headed clear by keeper Kepa, Saints rebuild with their first spell of sustained possession, before Ward-Prowse shoots over from distance.
Free-kick to Chelsea...
Still no shots at either end, but there could be one incoming as Chelsea are awarded a free-kick 25 yards out after Armstrong leans into Willian. Alonso strikes the top of the wall, but it goes behind for a corner.
First action for Gunn
The young goalkeeper has to be alert as Hazard looks to slice open the Saints defence with a low pass towards Willian, but out comes Gunn to push the ball away from the onrushing Brazilian.
Early possession for the hosts
Chelsea have dominated the early possession, but the Blues are yet to threaten in the final third. Valery heads clear a diagonal pass aimed at Hazard - the young Frenchman needs to be on his toes this evening!
We're up and running!
Chelsea have kicked off and we're straight into the action at Stamford Bridge. Come on, Saints!
