  • Striker capitalises on defensive error to score

we were improving our performance and getting better chances. for that, it was a pity we gave it away so easily with two horrible mistakes.

FULL TIME: Cardiff City 1-0 Southampton

It's defeat for Ralph Hasenhüttl in his first match in charge, as a mistake from Jannik Vestergaard is seized upon by Callum Paterson to score the only goal at the Cardiff City Stadium. Otherwise there was not a lot in the game - Cardiff shaded the first half, Saints the second, but it's the result that counts and this is a big one for the hosts, who have now won four home matches in a row.

+1’

3️⃣ minutes to be added...

There will be a minimum of three minutes of stoppage time, and one has already come and gone.

90’

Cardiff City substitution: Joe Ralls replaces Harry Arter

Final change of the day sees the hobbling Arter replaced.

Sponsored by Utilita

87’

Gabbiadini heads over

From a free-kick wide on the left, Gabbiadini gets his head to Targett's cross, but the ball is fractionally behind him and his header sails over.

84’

Cardiff City substitution: Kadeem Harris replaces Josh Murphy

Harris comes on to replace fellow wide man Murphy, with Saints back in the ascendancy now. Six minutes to go.

Sponsored by Utilita

83’

Cardiff scramble the ball to safety...

Suddenly Saints come to life, as Redmond turns away from Arter. Ward-Prowse delivers a dangerous low cross that gets away from Etheridge, but Morrison is in the right place to clear.

81’

Another chance for Morrison...

The game is getting away from Saints, who look shellshocked by the goal. Morrison should really put the game to bed, but again his radar is off with a free header.

80’

Southampton substitution: James Ward-Prowse replaces Oriol Romeu

Final Saints change sees Ward-Prowse enter the fray.

Sponsored by Utilita

79’

Lemina goes down...

The midfielder claims a hand in the face from Ecuele Manga as the pair clash at a corner, but play continues.

77’

Morrison heads wide

The home crowd are making a racket now, as Camarasa delivers a free-kick headed well wide by Morrison.

75’

Southampton substitution: Manolo Gabbiadini replaces Charlie Austin

An immediate response from Hasenhüttl, although this change may have been prepared before the goal. Gabbiadini is on.

Sponsored by Utilita

Paterson breaks the deadlock

It's the opening goal but it's gone to Cardiff - against the run of play. It's a bad mistake from Vestergaard, who makes a mess of his backpass, and Paterson steals in to beat McCarthy.

73’

GOAL

Callum Paterson (73’) | 1 0

2️⃣0️⃣ minutes to go ⏳

Saints are still on top at the Cardiff City Stadium, and have been since the interval, but clear chances are at a premium in south Wales.

67’

Cardiff City substitution: David Junior Hoilett replaces Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

First Cardiff change is a like for like swap on the wing.

Sponsored by Utilita

66’

Wide from Targett

Targett steps up to take, but it's harmlessly wide of Etheridge's right-hand post.

65’

Yellow Card for Joe Bennett (Cardiff City)

Bennett goes into the book after some determined work from Redmond earns a free-kick in shooting territory.

61’

Armstrong goes down... no penalty ❌

Armstrong gets into the box and turns sharply away from Camarasa, who leaves a leg hanging and the Scot goes down. Nothing given. Armstrong is convinced he was caught.

60’

Saints growing in confidence...

It's been a much-improved second-half display so far from Saints. Armstrong's corner worries Etheridge, before Højbjerg picks out Lemina, who slips at the vital moment. Pressure building from the visitors.

55’

Over the top from Højbjerg

A clever corner routine nearly pays dividends, as Targett goes low towards Austin, but Gunnarsson beats him to it. Højbjerg picks up the pieces outside the box and has a go from distance, but his shot sails high over the crossbar.

51’

Mendez-Laing goes close

A searching pass from Camarasa finds Mendez-Laing on the far side, who steps inside Targett and shoots towards the far post - or was it a cross? Either way, McCarthy waves it past, untroubled.

46’

We're back under way!

The second half is up and running. Who will strike first?

HT

Southampton substitution: Jack Stephens replaces Yan Valery

It's Hasenhüttl's first substitution - Valery, who has struggled against Murphy's pace, is off.

HALF TIME: Cardiff City 0-0 Southampton

We've reached the break in driving wind and rain in south Wales, where Saints remain on level terms. Cardiff have carried the greater threat, typically not shy in sending balls into the opposition box, but Saints have defended manfully to keep the hosts at bay. Ralph Hasenhüttl will want to see more attacking threat, but his team do look more solid.

+1’

Crucial tip over from McCarthy

Mendez-Laing works a shooting chance on the edge of the box and hits it with real power, but McCarthy is in the right place to reach up high and help it on its way over.

45’

One added minute...

Half time is approaching at the Cardiff City Stadium.

41’

Outside the area?

Højbjerg chases a ball over the top from Austin, as keeper Etheridge races out to catch it. The Dane appeals for handball outside the box, but the referee isn't interested.

37’

Caught in the wind...

Now Cardiff have a corner of their own, as Camarasa's delivery sails dangerously close to the far post and nearly catches out McCarthy, but Saints clear after Morrison helps it back into the danger zone.

34’

Lemina shoots over

That was a decent chance. Targett's corner takes a looping touch that drops on to the crossbar. It bounces out invitingly for Lemina to strike, but he snatches at it as the ball was slow to drop, and his shot is over the top.

32’

Armstrong tries his luck

We know what he's capable of, as Armstrong lines up a shot 25 yards from goal, but it deflects behind for a corner. Can Saints make it count?

29’

Bennett fires over

From the free-kick following Valery's yellow card, Romeu heads clear only as far as Bennett, who shoots more in hope than expectation and it's a long way over.

28’

Yellow Card for Yan Valery (Southampton)

Murphy gets beyond Valery, who pulls him back and goes into the book.

5️⃣0️⃣🆙

Today marks a 50th Saints appearance for Academy graduate Matt Targett! 👏

25’

Vital work from McCarthy

Another close shave, as Murphy surges into the box, Valery holds him up, allowing McCarthy to dive at the winger's feet and halt him in his tracks.

20’

Austin forces a save from Etheridge

First save of the game for the Cardiff keeper, as Targett's free-kick is met by the head of Austin, but there's not a lot of pace on the cross and Austin struggles to generate the necessary power to really trouble Etheridge.

19’

Yellow Card for Sean Morrison (Cardiff City)

A clever shimmy from Højbjerg fools Morrison, who pulls him back to concede a free-kick and becomes the first player to enter the referee's notebook.

18’

McCarthy saves from Murphy...

Cardiff are enjoying a good spell now. Camarasa bursts forward and feeds Murphy to his left, who runs at Valery and drills a shot goalwards beaten away by McCarthy. Morrison then heads wide from the resulting corner.

14’

Crucial challenge from Bednarek! 💪

That was a let-off. Targett was caught in possession by Mendez-Laing, who raced away from Romeu and into the box, but across came Bednarek to make a vital last-ditch tackle.

12’

Paterson slides a shot wide

Cardiff doing what they do best by keeping the ball alive from a set-piece. Defender Morrison shows admirable composure to turn in the box and look for Paterson, but Targett gets a crucial touch on the way that forces the striker's shot off target on the stretch.

10’

McCarthy denies Arter

First we've seen of Cardiff as an attacking threat, as Camarasa's deep cross from the left is helped back across goal by Mendez-Laing for Arter, but the midfielder cannot make a clean connection and McCarthy has a fairly routine save to make.

6’

Another sight of goal for Austin...

After Lemina was impeded in the air by Arter, Vestergaard takes the resulting free-kick. Instead of shooting, the big Dane plays a disguised ball into Austin, who lifts it over. It was a difficult chance for the striker, who had to adjust quickly and could only help it goalwards.

2’

Just wide from Austin!

Positive start from Saints, full of intent, as Targett crosses low from the left for Austin, who gets across the front and flicks it towards the far corner, but it's just wide of the post.
