  • Redmond hits the bar for Saints before Obafemi scuffs the follow-up from close range
  • Davis scores in the closing stages, but the goal is ruled out for handball by VAR

FULL TIME: Leicester 0-0 Southampton (6-5 on pens)

Lady Luck was smiling on hosts Leicester, who should have been out before spot-kicks. Nathan Redmond hit the crossbar and Michael Obafemi spurned a golden chance from the rebound, before Steven Davis had a goal chalked off by VAR and Manolo Gabbiadini hit the bar in stoppage time. Both teams converted their first five penalties, but Danny Ward denied Gabbiadini before Nampalys Mendy struck the winner.

PS

Mendy wins it for Leicester

It's all over, as Mendy rifles home the winning penalty, and Saints are beaten 6-5 on spot-kicks.

PS

Ward denies Gabbiadini...

So cruel, as Gabbiadini, who was inches away from winning the game in stoppage time, is thwarted by Ward diving to his right.

PS

Vardy makes no mistake

It's 5-5 and we're into sudden death. Who will step up?

PS

Cédric finds the top corner!

What a penalty! Vardy must score to keep Leicester in the cup...

PS

Gray makes it 4-4

Another confident penalty, and it's down to the fifth takers...

PS

Vestergaard scores!

It's 4-3 to Saints, as Vestergaard just squeezes his kick beyond the dive of Ward, who nearly reached it.

PS

Soyuncu makes it 3-3

The defender puts Gunn the wrong way - neither keeper has got near one yet.

PS

Redmond finds the net

Saints lead again, and again Ward is sent the wrong way!

PS

Albrighton scores

It's 2-2, as Albrighton follows the example set by Fuchs and goes straight down the middle.

PS

Højbjerg scores with ease

The Dane sends Ward the wrong way and Saints lead 2-1!

PS

Fuchs levels things up

The left-back smashes it straight down the middle as Gunn dives to his left.

PS

Davis scores!

First up is Davis, who confidently puts Ward the wrong way!

PS

Remember Everton, anyone? 💭

Come on, Saints! 🤞

FULL TIME: Leicester City 0-0 Southampton

We're not quite sure how Saints have not already gone through here. After VAR denied Steven Davis's goal in the closing stages, substitute Manolo Gabbiadini struck the crossbar with a free-kick from virtually the last kick of the game. On we go with penalties...

+6’

Against the crossbar! 😩

So unlucky! Gabbiadini hits a beautiful free-kick over the wall, but it crashes against the face of the crossbar and stays out...

+5’

Yellow Card for Jonny Evans (Leicester City)

Evans trips Redmond on the edge of the box. Free-kick for Saints, Gabbiadini to take...

+4’

Vardy loses his footing

A typical piece of movement from Vardy sees the striker peel off to receive a ball over the top, which is perfectly into his path, but the former England international slips at the vital moment and Saints breathe a sigh of relief.

90’

6️⃣ added minutes 😨

Still plenty of time for a winner...

89’

Final change for Saints...

With stoppage time looming, Gabbiadini replaces youngster Obafemi. This must be with penalties in mind - there will be no extra time, remember.

84’

Davis scores... but the goal is chalked off! 😡

Redmond makes his way into the Leicester box, darting between two challenges, before the ball pops up and potentially strikes his hand. The hosts appeal but play goes on and Davis finishes smartly with his left foot, prompting chants of "V-A-R" around the King Power Stadium. The referee duly takes the advice of his video assistant and rules it out!

79’

Gray fires wide

A mazy run from the winger, who makes his way across the box, but cannot wrap his right foot around the ball to bring it back inside the near post and shoots wide.

78’

Leicester City substitution: Marc Albrighton replaces Fousseni Diabaté

Final Leicester change sees one winger replace another.

Sponsored by Utilita

77’

Gunn saves from Okazaki

A half-chance for the substitute, who tries his luck from the edge of the box, but it's a very routine save for Gunn, who makes an easy catch.

1️⃣5️⃣ minutes to go 👀

Penalties could be on the horizon at the King Power Stadium - it remains 0-0, and clear chances have been few and far between all night.

73’

Southampton substitution: Steven Davis replaces Stuart Armstrong

Second Saints change - Davis enters the fray in place of Armstrong.

Sponsored by Utilita

70’

Stephens saves Saints!

That was a real chance for Leicester, but Vardy's pass to Diabate is just a little short, allowing Stephens to slide in and make a vital block.

67’

Højbjerg denied by Ward

Saints are pressing now. Højbjerg drives forward from midfield again and hits a low shot that Ward gets down to sharply, also ensuring he holds on to it with Obafemi lurking.

64’

A golden chance goes begging!

What a chance for Obafemi to break the deadlock... Brilliant from Redmond, who drives at the Leicester defence and rifles a shot against the underside of the bar. It falls invitingly for Obafemi, six yards out, but the striker cannot make a good enough connection and the chance is lost 😩

63’

Southampton substitution: Cédric replaces Matt Targett

Still feeling the effects of the earlier collision with Simpson, Targett is unable to continue. Cédric comes on to play in an unfamiliar left wing-back role.

Sponsored by Utilita

62’

Leicester City substitution: Nampalys Mendy replaces Adrien Sebastian Perruchet Silva

In fact it's a double change for Claude Puel - this is a like for like change in midfield.

Sponsored by Utilita

61’

Leicester City substitution: Shinji Okazaki replaces Kelechi Iheanacho

First substitution is a Leicester change, and it's a straight swap up front.

Sponsored by Utilita

60’

Stephens blocks Gray's shot

Another possible opening for Leicester, as Stephens gets an important block on a Gray shot, sending the ball looping into the air. Iheanacho is underneath it, but his attempted header across goal for strike partner Vardy goes behind for a goal kick.

57’

Stephens clears crucially

That was a heart in mouth moment for Saints. Fuchs fizzes in a free-kick that sparks a bout of pinball in the Saints box, but fortunately Stephens is there to boot the ball to safety before a blue shirt can pounce.

54’

Positive start from Saints 💪

It's been a bright start to the second period from Saints, as Højbjerg breaks forward and feeds Targett to his left, whose cross is deflected behind for a corner.

47’

Targett receiving treatment

The Saints wing-back has been down for some time after a clash of heads with Simpson. Now he's back on his feet!

45’

We're back under way!

The second half is up and running. Who will make the breakthrough?

HALF TIME: Leicester City 0-0 Southampton

Still no goals as we reach the interval at the King Power Stadium. Saints have been the team in the ascendancy for the most part, with Michael Obafemi denied by Danny Ward on his first senior start, but the Foxes have pace on the break and have put Saints under pressure from a couple of set-pieces. Very much in the balance - just a reminder we will go straight to penalties if it stays like this!

+2’

Redmond drags his shot wide

Running laterally along the 18-yard line, Redmond swivels to shoot on his left foot, but rather snatches at it and drags his effort past the post.

45’

2️⃣ added minutes...

We're into stoppage time at the end of the first half, and it's Saints who are finishing the opening period on top.

44’

Højbjerg shoots...

Redmond thinks about shooting himself, 20 yards from goal, but decides there are too many blue shirts in the way and instead lays it square for Højbjerg to strike. As the skipper sets his sights, Iheanacho nips in front of him and the Saints man only succeeds in dishing out a meaty whack to the back of the Nigerian's leg - entirely unintentional, but enough to concede a free-kick. Looked painful!

38’

Ndidi blazes over

Another Fuchs throw comes flying into the Saints box and again it's cleared. This time only to Ndidi, who is lurking in shooting territory 30 yards out, but the midfielder's attempt is more in danger of clearing the stadium than troubling Gunn.

1️⃣0️⃣ minutes until half time...

It remains evenly poised in the East Midlands, where Saints have given as good as they've got in a game of few chances so far. It's still goalless with half time approaching.

33’

Vestergaard heads over

Now the big Dane puts his size to good use at the other end, as he meets Targett's corner, but his header just drops on to the top of the net.

31’

Vestergaard clears again

Not for the first time, Fuchs trots across to hurl in a long throw as Leicester send the big men forward, but none bigger than Vestergaard, who wins another aerial duel to repel the danger.

24’

Redmond fires over

Another less presentable sight of goal for Saints, as Redmond lines up a 30-yard free-kick, but his attempt sails harmlessly over the crossbar.

23’

Obafemi denied by Ward!

First notable chance of the night falls the way of the 18-year-old striker. It actually comes from a Leicester long throw, imperiously headed out by Vestergaard to Redmond, who quickly releases Obafemi. The teenager worries the defence with his pace and heads straight for goal. He's forced wide, on to his less favoured left foot, and Ward sticks out a leg to repel his shot.

18’

Valery strides forward

First time we've really seen Valery showcase his attacking talents, as the young debutant bursts deep into Leicester territory and delivers a low cross, but Armstrong is just fractionally late arriving to meet it, and the Foxes clear the danger.

15’

Gray shows his pace

Saints have enjoyed a good spell here, but suddenly Leicester launch a counter-attack and Gray finds himself running at the visiting defence. He shoots from 20 yards, but Vestergaard is in the right place to make an important block.

11’

Yellow Card for Danny Simpson (Leicester City)

Simpson goes into the book for a crunching tackle on Lemina that leaves the midfielder requiring lengthy treatment. That might have been a red card offence.

9’

Better from Saints

Leicester started quickly but Saints have now settled into this game. Armstrong's 20-yard shot is blocked, before Targett finds a good crossing position and picks out Obafemi, but the ball just runs away from the youngster in the box.

4’

Ndidi too slow to react...

Leicester earn their second corner in the opening minutes. When Gray's delivery is flicked on at the near post, the ball squirts between the legs of Ndidi, who would have had a clear sight of goal from six yards had he been able to sort his feet out quicker.

We're under way in Leicester!

The skipper is ready 💪

For the second time in four days, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg will don the captain's armband. The teams are in the tunnel and kick-off is approaching!

And the mystery goalscorer was...

That was a tricky one! The answer to our latest poll was this man: Stern John, who opened the scoring in a 2-1 victory for Saints at the King Power Stadium back in December 2007. Andy King - still with the Foxes - scored the hosts' equaliser, before Andrew Surman converted a second-half penalty to secure the points. Well done if you were in the small minority who remembered correctly! 🤓

Refresh your memory of how we got here... 💭

It's been a while since Saints were last in Carabao Cup action, and it proved a long night on Merseyside, as the fourth round meeting with Everton went all the way to a penalty shoot-out. Well done to the 43% of you who answered correctly in our poll as we tested your memory of our spot-kick takers! 👏

17.48

i think he's in a good place at the moment. he came on against fulham and got a couple of shots off, and was a little bit unfortunate, but that's what he can do - he's a livewire, he's got a lot of pace and that always upsets teams late in games.

Obafemi's time to shine?

Teenage striker Michael Obafemi has added fresh enthusiasm into the Saints frontline, having made his third Premier League appearance of the season off the bench at Fulham, where he threatened to grab a vital equaliser in the closing stages. Could the youngster be called upon again tonight?

How have Leicester dealt with tragedy?

Tonight's cup tie was originally scheduled to take place four weeks ago, before tragedy struck, as Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was killed in a helicopter accident. The match was postponed and given a new date, while the Foxes were left to grieve. Journalist Rob Tanner of the Leicester Mercury explains how the club has pulled together as we got the Inside Track from the East Midlands.

16.52

these are difficult times for leicester, obviously, with the circumstances surrounding their owner's tragic accident, and they're still dealing with that emotion. but we can't allow that to affect our focus and we want to stay in the competition - it's been good to us so far.
