Report: South coast stalemate at Bournemouth
Southampton halted the momentum of free-scoring Bournemouth in an evenly-contested goalless draw. Our report from the Vitality Stadium.
17.15FULL-TIME: Bournemouth 0-0 Saints
It finishes all square at the Vitality Stadium. Saints had their chances to win it in the second half, with all three substitutes making a positive impact from the bench. Not least Manolo Gabbiadini, who could have nicked it at the death, after clever wide play from Redmond, but it wasn't to be as the visitors are forced to accept a share of the points.
Final few minutes...
McCarthy goes in search of Redmond. The winger does superbly to beat Ake, and dink a ball towards Gabbiadini, who rises and heads agonisingly over. Begovic was beaten by the accuracy of the cross, but the forward can't convert. 😩
Ibe escapes
The substitute powered past Bertrand, before Hoedt intervened, but conceded a free-kick. Shane Long provides the defensive header for Saints, at the expense of a corner, which is again cleared.
Mazy run from Stanislas
The winger has looked dangerous since coming on. He cuts inside, but takes one touch too many and is crowded out by Hoedt and Stephens. Cook then launches a long throw, presenting a chance for Gosling to shoot, but Stephens blocks.
Lerma header
Deep free-kick into the area, which the midfielder is first to. He rises and flicks the ball on, but McCarthy is able to collect easily enough.
Yellow Card for Callum Wilson (Bournemouth)
For a push on Wesley Hoedt.
Wilson tumbles in the box
Cédric certainly takes the ball first, but catches the striker who goes over in the area. Shouts of a penalty from the home support, but referee Lee Probert uninterested.
Into the final 10
Long with two opportunities to break the deadlock, agonisingly close for Saints. Before the ball dropped out of the sky for Armstrong, headed across goal by Long, but not seized upon by Armstrong, whose control let him down at the final moment.
King shot blocked
Good defending from Hoedt initially, and then from Austin, who heads behind for a corner. Ake latched on to the delivery, and got up well, but headed straight into the arms of McCarthy. That was Bournemouth's first attempt on target.
Højbjerg volley
Lovely technique again from the Dane, who forces a one-handed save from Begovic. The ball fell nicely to him, and the chested control was neat, but it would have taken a lot for him to beat the Bournemouth stopper from that distance.
Bournemouth threatening
Francis had the eventual shot, after good work again from Stanislas. The wideman linked with Callum Wilson, before it was spread to Francis, but the shot wasn't overly inspiring. The resulting corner was cleared by Saints.
King mishits
On his weaker side, King miscues the shot, where perhaps he should have done better. Stanislas had broken, and found the reverse pass towards the forward, who didn't get a clean strike.
Cédric cross
The full-back had got forward well, escaping his marker, but didn't get his head up before crossing. The ball was cut out by Steve Cook, but Ings and Austin had both checked their runs, and looked to be available on the edge of the technical area.
Ings forces save
The forward collected the ball out wide, and drifted in-field before hitting a shot-cum-cross. Begovic watched the ball into his arms, but it does represent another effort on target for Mark Hughes's side. The game is opening up slightly.
Francis forward
Brooks tries to play a sly ball through to the defender, who had advanced well down the right. But overhit the pass.
Lemina down
The midfielder looks to have jarred his knee upon landing. He's down receiving treatment.
King heads wide
Much in the same way that the first half started, the home side are on the attack from kick-off. Lerma whipped an inviting delivery towards King, who headed marginally off target.
Brooks restarts
Bournemouth get the second period under way. We're goalless here, so expecting a livelier half!
HALF-TIME: Bournemouth 0-0 Saints
An even first half comes to an end. Charlie Austin had the visitors' best opportunity, but wasn't able to test Begovic. Saints have contained their south coast neighbours effectively enough, but Mark Hughes will no doubt want to see more attacking intent in the second period.
Højbjerg drive
The midfielder hits one on the volley from range. He caught it well, and with accuracy, but Begovic was able to save. Some direction either side of the Bournemouth stopper could have provided a different outcome, however.
Yellow Card for Mario Lemina (Southampton)
The midfielder lunges into Josh King, who tumbles over the outstretched leg. Saints' second booking.
Ings senses opportunity...
Bournemouth, looking to get forward at every opportunity, are leaving a two on two situation with Austin and Ings lurking. It could well prove beneficial for the forward pairing...
Saints go close...
Charlie Austin was in behind, and after beating Francis, attempted to take the ball around Begovic. He overran it, but there was a glimpse of goal for the striker there.
Yellow Card for Ryan Bertrand (Southampton)
The full-back goes into the referee's book for kicking the ball away.
Even stevens
Nothing much between the sides here. Both attempting to create chances from wide areas, but goalmouth action has been limited. Saints are containing the hosts.
Wilson heads wayward
The striker can't control his header, under pressure from returning centre-back Jack Stephens. Good defending from the youngster.
Austin clashes with Ake
The pairing compete for the ball in the air, but clash heads. Both receive treatment, and are okay to re-enter the pitch.
Redmond one on one
Simon Francis ushers Redmond towards the byline, and he wins a corner off the the centre-half. The delivery is too close to Begovic who catches, and launches a counter attack with Josh King. Saints win the ball back, after a wasteful pass from Cook.
Optimistic from Lemina
The midfielder had a go from distance, but didn't get enough purchase on the ball as it rolls through to Asmir Begovic. Saints aiming to get on the front foot early.
Brooks shot
The youngster opened his body up for the shot, but failed to get any curl on the ball. McCarthy happy to watch the effort sail past the far post.
Corner...
Fraser found himself in-field, allowing an overload down the right. Saints win a corner, which is delivered by Redmond. The ball eventually fell to Højbjerg, who tried his luck, but there were plenty of Bournemouth shirts to block the effort.
McCarthy catches comfortably
Ryan Fraser curls a cross into the area, but it had enough flight for the Saints stopper to be favourite to claim. The visitors were then on the attack, but Charlie Austin had drifted offside as Bertrand drilled the ball into the striker's feet.
Redmond fires over
The wideman tries his luck from distance, perhaps 40 yards out. The free-kick has plenty of pace, which eventually sees the ball sail over the crossbar.
From the off...
Callum Wilson tees up Adam Smith, pulling the ball across the box for the full-back to strike, but he rather muddles his feet. The danger is cleared, but that's an early warning sign for Saints.
We're under way...
And we're off in this all south coast affair. Saints in their away strip, blue and yellow in the Dorset sunshine. Let's go, lads! 😇

Cherries' injury concerns
Team news is coming up at 2pm BST, and, while Mark Hughes appeared to have no fresh concerns this week, Eddie Howe has two worries for Bournemouth, both of which are important attacking players. Ryan Fraser is a doubt with a hamstring issue, while striker Josh King has been battling with an ankle injury.
