Early years
Stuart Armstrong was born in Inverness in March 1992, playing his youth football at Dyce Boys Club, in Aberdeenshire, and then Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
He joined Dundee United in 2009, making his professional debut in November 2010, in a 1-1 home draw with Kilmarnock in Scotland’s top-flight.
Armstrong would go on to establish a notable reputation as a goal-scoring midfielder at Tannadice Park, with 21 goals and 31 assists in 150 appearances.
Big break at Celtic
His performances earned him the attention of Celtic, who completed a move for him in 2015.
Armstrong quickly became a fan favourite in the green-and-white half of Glasgow, playing a key role in the back-to-back domestic trebles under manager Brendan Rodgers.
His individual contributions in the final third – scoring or assisting 63 times in 144 matches (28 goals and 35 assists) – coincided with an historic and record-breaking period for the club.
In total, Armstrong celebrated four Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups in his time at Celtic.
A scoring debut against Partick Thistle in February 2015 was a sign of things to come in Glasgow. A European bow quickly followed against Inter Milan in the Europa League before a breakout 2016/17 campaign under new manager Rodgers for whom he became a standout performer.
Playing off the striker, Armstrong scored 17 goals in all competitions – a new career-best, topping the 11 for Dundee United in 2013-14 – as Celtic ended the season unbeaten on the way to the first of two domestic trebles.
But, it was not just the quantity of goals from midfield that caught the eye.
Strong off both sides and deadly arriving late on the edge of the penalty area, the number 10 compiled a catalogue of spectacular strikes from distance in his time with The Hoops, a 30-yard drive into the top corner against Hamilton in December 2016 the pick of the bunch.
International recognition was not far behind: a first Scotland cap against Slovenia in March 2017 and goal in a 3-0 win over Lithuania at Hampden Park came before the close of 2017.
A knee injury through the winter limited Armstrong to 14 league starts in 2017/18, though three goals, four assists, four UEFA Champions League bows and five Scotland caps represented a respectable return nonetheless.
Joining Saints
He then completed a move to St Mary’s in June 2018, becoming the first arrival of the summer transfer window.
In total, Armstrong made 32 appearances in his opening season at Saints, netting four goals – the pick of which was a tremendous double away to Fulham, in November 2018.
The Scot continued to become a key member of the side during the 2019/20 season with his five goals matching James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond.
The midfielder scored in consecutive away games against Leicester City and Crystal Palace as Saints yielded six points. He then followed this up with a late strike to confirm a 2-0 win against Aston Villa in March 2020. He picked up straight away after the Premier League resumption scoring in the 3-0 win against Norwich City and then netting the opener as Saints drew 2-2 with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
However, the start of the 2020/21 season was hampered after the Scot picked up an injury whilst on international duty.
