Belgian adventures

Signed from Yeelen Olympique in his native Mali in 2017, Djenepo hit his stride in his second campaign in the Belgian Pro League, scoring seven goals while providing three assists in 25 league appearances to help the club secure a third-place finish and qualify for the Europa League.

And, it was in that competition in 2018/19 that the youngster demonstrated his natural talents to the wider footballing world.

The Malian international netted three times in five games in the group stages, including a decisive winner against five-time winners Sevilla on their way to ten points, a tally that would have earned qualification from all-but-two of the competition’s 12 groups.

International arrival

Djenepo also arrived at Saints with a burgeoning international career beginning to take shape.

Making his debut in a World Cup qualifying draw against Ivory Coast in October 2017 as an 18-year-old, Djenepo had collected eight Mali caps and one goal, against South Sudan, by the time his move to Saints was announced.

Pacey, precociously talented and with a point to prove, the young forward arrives on the south coast with all the necessary attributes to hurt Premier League defences up and down the country.Moussa

South coast bound

Djenepo arrived at St Mary’s in the summer of 2019, after a deal was agreed with Belgian club Standard Liège, with the highly-rated winger signing a four-year deal on the south coast.

His switch to St Mary’s and the Premier League represented the latest step in a meteoric rise to prominence for Djenepo, who moved off the back of a breakout season.

His pace, work ethic, dribbling ability and intelligence off the ball make him a dangerous proposition in transition and on the counter, featuring from both flanks and through the middle in Liege’s three-man attack.

Djenepo got his career on the South Coast started with a bang, scoring his first goal in the 2-0 win over Brighton on 24th August 2019.

The start to his Saints career also saw him claim a personal accolade. In September he received the Premier League Goal of the Month award for his solo effort in the win at Sheffield United.

He continued to become a fans favourite with his energetic performances but his 2019/20 season came to an end with a sending-off in the final game of the Premier League season before the coronavirus outbreak in a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

The winger would then suffer with injuries after the Premier League resumption, making a return to the pitch on the opening day of the 2020/21 Premier League season in a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.
